Dear Kristin, Mark-Robin and Patrick, I am deeply saddened to hear of Dean Giolando's passing. Dean will be greatly missed as a good colleague (and a friendly neighbor next to my office), a caring father and husband. Just during the winter break, he exchanged several emails with me about making an optimal choice for a laptop computer to suit Patrick’s scientific computing projects. May the memories and love of those around you keep you strong during this time. Sincerely, Xiche Hu.

Dear Kristin, I'm deeply saddened by the news. I’m still unable to accept the fact that the Dean is no more. I can’t imagine the pain you’re going through. He is one of the kind soul I met in my life. He is one of the few persons who influenced my life and helped me in making it better. I have learned many things from him. But, the best is “How big a problem is, the solution will be small and easy. We just need to search and find it. His words were light in the darkest period of life. His words and attitude towards me dragged me out of my depression and make me feel that there is always hope. On January 2nd when I heard the news from Ruwani, I felt very sad. But, today, when I saw his picture first thing came to me, is a smile on my face. Then, I realized Dean left a lot of happiness and positivity through his memories. I hope his memories make you feel the same way they did to me. Be strong and hold the boys. I know you will. You’re a strong woman. Hope to see you soon.
Peace of mind is a call away. We're here when you need us most.

Dear Kristin, I feel very sorry to hear the untimely demise of Prof. Giolando. I have worked with him for a couple of semesters as a teaching assistant. I always felt positive and encouraged while being around him during TA meetings, proctoring and grading exams. I used to see him many times a day in the corridor as our offices are just the opposite and I will miss his smiling face. My deepest condolences. Badri

Dear Kristin, Mark-Robin, and Patrick, Mary and I extend our deepest sympathies to all of you with the loss of your husband and father. I treasure all the many, many professional interactions that I had with Dean over the years and the many ways that Dean supported me and other colleagues both in grant-funded work and through his insightful and considerate personal advice. Dean was an important partner (co-investigator) on more than ten federal and state research grants in recent years advancing the technology of thin-film photovoltaic solar cells. Most recently, I have precious memories of canvassing with Kristin and Dean as we knocked on doors in the 2018 election campaign to promote good governance and environmental issues. When my family and I ran into Mark-Robin and Dean at the tree farm preparing for one of your family Christmas traditions, I was reminded again of Dean’s strong commitment to family—commitments that included the front-yard Halloween maze and, of course, all the Lego competitions. Dean will be greatly missed by us all, but we will treasure our memories of him and give thanks for his many gifts to us and for his generous and kind spirit that inspired us! --al

Dear Kristin, Mark Robin, and Patrick, It is with deep sadness that we are writing these lines. Even though we will not be able to be with you in person, you are in our thoughts and prayers. There is hardly anyone who has had a more profound impact on our life’s decisions than Dean. His kindness, phenomenal intelligence, unique sense of humor, and incredible abilities as a synthetic organometallic chemist will never be forgotten. Even though he was very soft-spoken, we always knew to listen to what he had to say. Your house was always open to us, and the memories we made with you are priceless. We hope you can find strength and comfort in each other during these very trying times. With all of our love, Stefan, Rita, and Christina.

Dear Kristin, We are very sorry to hear about Dean's passing and offer our deepest sympathies and prayers to you and your family. When I look back at my time at UT, I have always appreciated the friendship and support that Dean provided; he always made time for me , was open to discussions and helped deepen my understanding of Chemistry. I remember Dean's enthusiasm for Chemistry and how he instilled that same feelings in his students. I cannot help but smile when I think back about his graduate course on Representative Elements and the innovative and creative approaches he took to teaching. I am truly sorry to hear of his passing and tremendous loss to your family, the Chemistry Department and the community. Sincerely, Bryan, Melissa, Adam and Chloe Wicks
