Zana Mae Sandys, 87, of Maumee, Ohio, passed away on November 9, 2025. She was born on May 24, 1938, in Dayton, Ohio, to Morris A. and Kathryn L. (VanPelt) Fulkerson. Zana married Richard B. Sandys, with whom she shared 37 wonderful years of marriage.
Zana met Richard in the early 1960s while teaching grade school for the Dependent School System in Wethersfield, England. Upon returning to Ohio, she continued her passion for education and taught for many years, retiring after 25 years from Westfield Elementary School.
She loved traveling with her family and explored extensively throughout Europe, the Middle East, China, and Africa. Zana was deeply involved in her community and faith, serving actively at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. A lifelong lover of books, she participated in several book clubs and enjoyed music, serving as President of the Toledo Symphony League. Alongside her husband, she was also active with the Toledo Museum of Art.
Zana is survived by her son, Erik Sandys, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard B. Sandys, and her parents, Morris and Kathryn Fulkerson.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 20, 2025, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 4:00 p.m. at Maison Dardenne Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant Street, Maumee, Ohio. Burial will be private at Riverside Cemetery.
