Woodrow W. Woody McGinnis, 89, of Genoa, Ohio died June 28, 2011 in the Edward & Marion Knight Hospice Center, Perrysburg, OH. He was born April 20, 1922 to Walter and Mertie Thacker McGinnis in Clarion Vinton County, Ohio. He was the fifth of eight children. Woody graduated from Wilkesville High School in 1940 and attended Bliss College in Columbus, Ohio on the GI Bill. Woody was a member of the US Air Force beginning in September, 1942. He served in the Western Pacific Theatre, including Luzon, New Guinea, Okinawa, where he received seven bronze stars, the American Theatre Ribbon, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. After serving during WWII, Woody was discharged on November 21, 1945. He re-enlisted and served in Italy in the Military Police until he received a medical discharge in April of 1948. Woody retired from the Detroit Carpenters Union in 1982. He is a member of the American Legion Post #324 of Genoa, the VFW Life Member, the DAV, 40+8, and F.O. of Eagles. Woody married Betty J. Willmeth on September 15, 1951 in Richmond, Indiana, she preceded him in death on August 22, 2010. After living in several places in Ohio, they settled in Genoa in 1963. They had five children: Denise Michael Bryant, Woodrow Jane, Brian Susan, Patrice Mark Zimmerly and Lisa Reynolds, 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, sisters, Hanna Queen and Berdene Stacy. Woody was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers, Cletus and Earl, sisters, Beatrice Jones, Leoma Ponn, and Alma McGinnis. A memorial service will be conducted for Woody on Friday, July 1, 2011 at 11 AM in the Trinity United Methodist Church, 313 Main St. Genoa, Ohio. Interment will be in the Clay Township Cemetery, Genoa. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be directed to the church or the Allen-Clay Joint Fire Dist., Station #3, 101 Sixth St. Genoa, Ohio 43430. The Robinson-Walker Funeral Home and Crematory, 501 West St. Genoa, Ohio is assisting the family with arrangements.
