Willy Alfred Aey age 80, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away peacefully in his home on August 2, 2021 surrounded by his loving family. Willy and all of his family had just returned from their annual beach vacation to Myrtle Beach where they made one more year of lasting memories. Willy was a 1958 graduate of DeVilbiss High School and worked as a Tool and Die Maker for City Machine, Republic Tool and Die, Ford Motor Company and finally retiring from Jeep after 20 years. In his earlier years, Willy loved playing softball with his coworkers, golfing and bowling with his wife. While Willy often shared the story of his perfect 300 bowling game, a most cherished moment in his bowling career was the meeting of his wife Lois, at Westland Lanes. After just a few dates, Lois asked Willy to marry her and 7 months later they started their journey to many years of love and they would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on August 7th of this year. Willy, an avid Cleveland Browns and Indians fan, had a love of sports and spent many years coaching the Longfellow Tigers softball teams as well as the Longfellow Cubs, Longfellow Reds and DeVeaux Blue Demons baseball teams. His further devotion to his three children was watching them grow, which lead him to countless hours of service at Start High School volunteering for the Sideliners Athletic Boosters, where he was later inducted into the Start High School Hall of Fame. He played an integral role in raising the necessary funding for the installation of the Start High School football stadium lights, and running the concession stand where he was able to exercise his ultimate joy of purchasing food supplies at the best price from all over town. In recent years, Willy showed perseverance as a double amputee. Where his legs could no longer take him, his spirit, humor, and love of life carried him. He loved his family dearly and he knew how much they loved him. He enjoyed Yahtzee, playing cards and board games with his wife and family and his contagious “Papa Willy” smile was always captured in a photo with a giggle and a thumbs up. Willy was proceeded in death by his parents, Willy Sr. & Lucille; and his granddaughter, Brayleigh. He is survived by his devoted, loving wife of 50 years, Lois; his daughters, Wendy (Doug) Steinman and Heidi Aey; son, Kurt (Allison) Aey; grandchildren, Brooke (Tyler) Mahon, Dylan Aey, Courtney “Cam” McClellan, Sophia Steinman, and Devin, Kade and Dara Schroeder; sister, Clara Obee; numerous nieces and nephews; and countless supportive friends. Friends will be received at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey) on Wednesday, August 4, 2021 from 1-8 pm. Visitation will continue in the funeral home Thursday, August 5 after 10 am where funeral services will follow at 11 am. Interment, Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. Our family would like to thank Promedica Hospice, especially Kelly Macy, for guidance, knowledge and support during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations in Papa Willy’s name, be made to The Ability Center of Northwest Ohio or Promedica Hospice.
