William “Billy” Russell Wumer, Sr., 89, of Perrysburg, Ohio passed peacefully on February 20th, 2017 with his loving wife by his side. He was born the third child to Hazel (Shultz) and Wilbur Wumer on September 8, 1927 at Robinwood Hospital in Toledo, Ohio. Billy had two sisters, Emely and Barbara, and one brother James. He attended DeVilbiss High School and entered the Coast Guard upon his last year of high school. During his service, he was stationed in Greenland where he fueled Naval Vessels for his country in World War II. Upon his return from the war he went to Apprentice School and became a brick mason. Upon graduation, he went to work with his father at Bentley Corporation. His accomplishments included rebuilding the smoke stacks at Libbey Glass and various other foundations throughout the Toledo area. As Billy began to fine tune his craft, his visions grew. He ventured out on his own and started to develop properties throughout Northwest Ohio comprising of Williamsburg Subdivision in Bowling Green, Perry’s Landing, The Arbor Building, the present Shamas building, the Foxborough Subdivision, all located in Perrysburg, Crabtree and Evelyn and First Federal Banks located in Perrysburg, Rossford, and Bowling Green. He later purchased the Mather Estate on River Road and developed that into what is now known as Waterford Subvision. Billy continued to build and develop and well into his 80’s. In his 60 years of building he has left thousands of architectural treasures throughout Lucas and Wood County. Billy was kind to everyone he met and always had a warm handshake, a smile, and a joke. He made friends easily and was full of helpful advice. As a young man, he was involved in his church, Camp Storer, horses and boating. The more friends he made, the more his interests and hobbies grew. He started with little pedal cars that he found from his children’s childhood. He began to restore them and share them with his great grandchildren. Billy loved restoring and he became an antique car collector. He began restoring the old ’47 Ford Wood Station wagon, and came up with a new idea, he wanted to bring a touch of class to cars in the 90’s. He started a new business with his wife, Sharon. He used his self-taught carpenter skills to make wood panel sides out of walnut and ash for the Jeep Grand Cherokee. He took his Jeep to several shows and began to get so much interest in this new personalization for the SUV, that he was able to make to retrofit kits and ship them all over the United States, Japan, and Europe. He didn’t stop at just vehicles, he was avid boater, and there was always a boat in his life. Each boat he owned had a touch of class with his eye for attention to detail. One of his great joys was taking his boat, The Dutchman, through the Great Lakes, down the Atlantic and eventually docking her in Fort Myers, Florida. Billy had a flare for life and loved to pass on the knowledge he gained throughout his journey. He valued his faith, his family, and his education. He never stopped learning and was thinking and envisioning how to improve on something. He was involved within the community by serving as the President of the Otsego School Board. He was quick witted and was always willing to teach others or lend a helping hand to those in need. He worked hard and enjoyed his vacations. He enjoyed traveling with his wife throughout the United States, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and parts of Asia. One of his most memorable trips was going to see the Pearl Harbor Memorial with his family.
