William J (Bill) Thompson, age 90, of Holland, OH, went home to be with the Lord on January 5, 2026, surrounded by family. He was born on April 24, 1935, in Belding, Michigan.
In 1953, he began his 42-year career at General Motors in Lansing, Michigan. In 1960, he transferred to Toledo, Ohio, hometown of Marcia (Drummond) Thompson, his wife of 65 years. As his career evolved, his ingenuity and problem-solving skills were formally recognized by GM for saving significant time and resources. The proceeds from these awards were consistently directed toward faith-based organizations and charities.
God blessed Bill with many talents and interests. He and Marcia enjoyed extensive travel, family trips to Florida, and spending winters there after retirement. He was an accomplished snow skier and ice skater, and he even managed to fully restore a 1966 MG Convertible. He was also a gifted artist, creating works that have become cherished family treasures.
His true passion began at age 23, when he became deeply aware that his life needed a different direction. He turned to Jesus and committed himself to living according to God's will-what he considered the most important decision of his life. In the years that followed, he became a respected teacher and leader to many, holding multiple leadership roles within the church, always giving wise counsel. Bill will be remembered as a leader by example, not by words or fanfare.
He shared a beautiful 65 year marriage with his wife Marcia, another reflection of his faith and dedication. He deeply loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and was intentional about ensuring that his faith, values, and love would continue through generations.
He is survived by his wife, Marcia; his children, Luann Heffelfinger (Eric) and Robert W. Thompson (Janel); his grandchildren, Adam Heffelfinger, Timothy Heffelfinger, Robert D. Thompson (Maddie), Emmy Walker (Luke), and Allison Hyrcza (Nick); his great-grandchildren, Nolan Heffelfinger (son of Timothy), Lena Heffelfinger (daughter of Adam), Elaine Walker, Everly Walker, and Charles Hyrcza; and extended family and friends who were blessed by his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, Orval and Winifred Thompson; his brother, Russell Thompson; and his sisters, Erma Harrington, Donna Miller, and Ayme Miller.
A visitation will be held Friday, January 9, from 3-7 PM at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave. A Christian funeral service will be held Saturday, January 10, at 11:00 AM at Grace Church Perrysburg, 601 E. Boundary St, preceded by visitation from 10-11 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grace Church Perrysburg, PCU Food Pantry, or Ohio Living Hospice.
We take comfort in knowing Bill has finished the race, kept the faith, and now rests in the presence of his Savior. His legacy of faith, love, and quiet strength will live on.
