WILLIAM GEORGE THIELMAN William Thielman was born in Toledo, OH on March 1, 1921 to George and Louise Thielman. Bill attended Scott High School, graduating in 1939. Bill then attended the University of Toledo, graduating in 1943. Because Bill had enlisted while at UT, and the country being at war, he could not attend graduation. By special invitation with two others in 1986, he finally had a graduation ceremony 43 years late. Bill was a member of the Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity. Bill attended Midshipman’s School at Notre Dame College. Bill then served on a LCI (L) landing craft and participated in landings in North Africa, Italy, Sicily, and France, landing troops on D-Day at Normandy. In 1947 Bill married the love of his life, Nancy Jean Castle of Owosso, MI. They were married 71 years. Bill started at Libbey Owens Ford Co. in Rossford, working as an Industrial Engineer and Industrial relations manager. After 36 years, Bill retired in 1983. Bill then went to work for Owens College for 3 years. Not being able to sit around, he then drove school bus for Perrysburg for special events and sports. Bill was active in his community, feeling a need to give back. He was on the committee to build the West Toledo YMCA, President of Grove Patterson School PTA, and President of the Perrysburg Community Recreation Committee. Bill served on church councils at St. James, Grace and Zoar Lutheran Churches. He was especially active with service to youths. He was a member of YMCA Indian Guides, and especially proud of his Boy Scout service. He was an Eagle Scout and lifeguard at Camp Miakonda in the mid 1930’s. Later he served as Scoutmaster and on scout council for Troop 102 at Zoar Church in Perrysburg. Bill also coached little league baseball in Perrysburg. Bill lived a life full of service to his country, community, and family, putting everyone before himself. He will be missed terribly by all who knew and loved him! Thielman, Jr., and son, David (Deisa) Thielman; grandchildren, Jay Johnson, Jennifer Johnson, Sarah (Drew) Heidel, Natalie Frederickson, Alec (Sara) Thielman and Ian (Ashley) Thielman and eight great-grandchildren.
