William Charles Steward

June 21, 1933 — October 17, 2023

William “Bill” C. Steward, 90, of Rossford, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Toledo. He was the son of Merrill I. and Mae E. (Marchant) Steward, born in Rossford on June 21, 1933. He graduated from Rossford High School in 1951 and started his working career at Overland Jeep in Toledo. He joined the U.S. Army in 1953, proudly serving in Korea and Japan until his honorable discharge in 1955. Bill was an electrician, working at the LOF, Rossford Plant, starting in 1952, and remained there until his retirement in 1991. After retiring, Bill spent 17 years working for Transtar Electric as a job site supply delivery driver and pulling materials needed for jobs at construction sites. He retired from Transtar in 2007.


Bill married Gretchen M. (Andrews) on January 16, 1960, in Monroe, Michigan. They shared a wonderful life together until her death on July 28, 2007. He and Gretchen enjoyed traveling to the Caribbean Islands, soaking up the sun and surf and traveling across the United States. He and his family enjoyed all his “toys”; RV’s, boats, going to car shows, and his passion for a new car every two years! Bill loved animals. Dogs were always a part of the family. He was bonded to his two Golden Retrievers, Lucy and JoJo that were rescue pets. He made friends with the squirrels in his yard, even feeding them cookies by hand. In his younger years, he was a Boy Scout and attended the Jamboree in New Mexico. He was a member of the Glassworkers Union a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the Zenobia Lancers, and a former Eagles Lodge member. In May 2014, Bill was chosen to travel to Washington DC with Honor Flight, His daughter, Holly accompanied him on the trip.


Bill was first and foremost a loving husband, father, and grandfather who was always there to help. He was the first to volunteer to help with anything electrical and could fix anything! He will be missed in so many ways.

Bill is survived by his daughter, Holly Steward and her husband, Terry Matthews, son, Doug Steward, son-in-law, Terry Tyson, grandchildren, Lauren Coe, Alex Tyson, Hannah Tyson, Jessica Steward, and Jamie (Eddie) Steward-Madai, four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gretchen, daughter, Cindy Tyson, parents, Merrill and Mae, sisters, Joyce Fanning and Judy Sattler, and nephew Troy Sattler. Visitation for Bill will be held on Monday, October 23, 2023, from 3:00-7:00 PM at the Sujkowski-Walker Funeral Home, 830 Lime City Road, Rossford, Ohio. A funeral service is scheduled for 11:30 AM, Tuesday, October 24, 2023, in the funeral home.
