William R. Steitz

William R. Steitz, age 84, of Sylvania, passed away peacefully at Hospice of Northwest Ohio on Tuesday, July 14, 2009. The son of Robert A. and Dorothy J. Schumacher Steitz, Bill was born on June 4, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois. He served in the Army Air Corp during WWII. He graduated from Northwestern University with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. Bill was employed for Toledo Engineering, retiring in 1990. He and his late wife, Dorothy, enjoyed traveling the world. Bill was a member of the Florida Auxiliary Coast Guard and of the VFW in Punta Gorda, FL where he and Dorothy lived for 16 years. He loved fishing and boating. Bill also achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and volunteered with the Boy Scouts. He was a parishioner of St. Matthews where he participated in the vestry. Mr. Steitz is survived by his children, Kathryn Steitz, William Mary Steitz, Jr, Peter Diana Steitz, Robert Steitz, and Linda Guthrie; grandchildren, Alisa Jason Logsdon, Kevin Rachel Steitz, Rebecca Andrew LaFountain, Ryan Steitz, Dean Steitz, Amanda Guthrie, Linda Guthrie, and Dorothy Guthrie; great-granddaughter, Gwendolyn LaFountain and brother, Robert A. Jean Steitz. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy E. Peterson Steitz who passed away in 2007. A memorial service will be held at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 2770 W. Central Ave., on Thursday at 3 pm. There will be a memorial gathering from 2 to 3 pm. Arrangements by the Walker Funeral Home 419-841-2422. There will be no visitation at funeral home.
