William Terrance McGuire passed away peacefully in his home in Curtice, Ohio on January 17, 2016 after a brief illness, surrounded by his wife and family. He was 86. The son of James Lewis McGuire and Edith Ann Strahley McGuire, Bill, as he was known to everyone, was born on September 5, 1929. Raised on Walden Avenue in East Toledo, he graduated from Waite High School. On September 16, 1950 in Toledo, he married Alma Clare Geisey, who became the mother of their six children. She preceded him in death on March 5, 1972. As an employee of the Toledo Edison Co. beginning in 1948, Bill taught himself radio engineering through home university courses, serving the company in that capacity until his retirement in 1988. An expert in electronics, mathematics, and chemistry, Bill also thoroughly versed himself in photography, gunsmithing, glassblowing, welding, machining, and a host of other fields. With his passion for history, Bill was among the earliest collectors of vintage radios in the USA, with a collection that at one point numbered in the hundreds, and in recent years he enjoyed tuning his 1926 Ford Model T until it ran perfectly. There were few areas that escaped his curiosity. He was a living embodiment of the adage, “The greatest way of learning is by doing.” Bill married Sharon Hummel on May 21, 1973, and together they restored a 120 year-old farmhouse near Williston, Ohio and tended a small farm and gardens. Here they hosted family gatherings and enjoyed babysitting their grandchildren and great grandchildren. Along with Sharon, his loving wife of 43 years, Bill is survived by his children, Julie Majo, William M. McGuire, Cynthia McGuire, Elizabeth Gallaher (Jeff) and Matthew McGuire (Kim), daughter-in-law, Kim McGuire of Blissfield, Michigan, and 12 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Sharon R. Anteau, on July 21, 2012, and a son, James K. McGuire, on July 19, 2015. Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Monday, January 25, 2016, at the Robinson-Walker Funeral Home Crematory, 501 West St., Genoa. The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 26, 2016, at the funeral home with interment to follow in Allen Township Cemetery, Williston. Memorials for Bill may be given to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or a charity of the donor’s choice.
