William S. Bumpus

William Stanley Bumpus, Sr., age 86, of Toledo, OH, passed away on November 29, 2011. He was born on January 19, 1925 to Leland and Florence Roberts Bumpus. Bill grew up on the family farm in Sandy Creek, NY. An Eagle Scout, and a competitive athlete on the high school baseball, basketball, and football teams, he enlisted soon after he graduated from Sandy Creek High School in 1942, where he met his first wife, Elizabeth Anne Betty DeLany of Syracuse, NY. He served with honors in the infantry in France and Germany in the 63rd Division, 255th Regiment. Upon returning stateside he graduated with a business degree from St. Lawrence University. A life-long, free-wheeling entrepreneur, Bill enjoyed careers as a banker, a dairy farmer, a commercial land developer, a home builder, a peat and grain broker, and a bean plant owner. Even at 81 years of age, his mind was abuzz with plans to enter the ethanol field. In later years he dedicated himself to his second wife, Norma Veit, of Toledo, OH, and stepson, Donald Veit. Bill is survived by his eleven children, William S. Suzanne Bumpus, Jr., Robert J. Suzette Bumpus, Patrick D. Bumpus, Virginia M. Dale Blackwell, Cecelia J. David Munn, Barbara S. Gary Zelehowsky, Nancy E. Kenneth Eato, Steven P. Bumpus, Mary Cathleen Raphel Blake, Christine C. Mark DAlessandro, Joanne M. Joe Michalski, 26 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, December 1, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. at Christ the King Church, Toledo, OH. A memorial service will be held at St. Marys of the Lake Church, Skaneateles, NY on Saturday, December 3, 2011 at 11:00 a.m.. Burial will follow at St. Marys Cemetery. At 1:00 p.m. friends of the family are invited to join in a celebration of Bills life at the American Legion Post 239, 3808 Jordan Rd, Skaneateles, NY.
