William Randall Benner

William Randall Benner, age 68, of Toledo, Ohio, was lovingly known to family as Randy and to friends as Wild Bill, always liking to have a good time! He enjoyed fishing with his dad, basketball, bowling, and watching WWF wrestling. William’s love of music and artistic talents as a musician and drummer was evident in his elementary years as a member of the start-up band The Night Walkers. He also drummed for other rock n’ roll groups throughout his teens and early 20’s. William played various Battle of the Band competitions and night clubs. William attended St. Agnes and Regina Coeli grade schools and graduated from Start High School in 1971. Following in his father’s footsteps, he enlisted in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He rose to the rank of Sergeant and distinguished himself as a sharpshooter and was recommended by his commanding officer to instruct rifle and pistol training at Camp Smith, Hawaii where he trained troops and non-commissioned officers for the final 1.5 years of his enlistment. William was honorably discharged in 1975. After his service in the Marine Corps, William was employed throughout his life at various companies including Gallant Lumber and Cornish Containers. William will best be known for his sense of humor and loving and caring heart as he helped care for his friends and aging parents. William is survived by sister Patrice Dick (fiancé, Tom Exton) and niece Emily Dick. He is predeceased by his parents, William & Irene (Matuszewski) Benner and brother-in-law, Thomas Dick. Visitation will be Tuesday, July 6, 2021, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Avenue, Toledo, OH 43623 (419-841-2422), where a Funeral Service will take place at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Toledo Memorial Park with military honors. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Genacross Lutheran Services Foundation or Hospice of NW Ohio are recommended. The family of William expresses their deepest appreciation to the nurses and aides who cared for his needs during this difficult time.
