Wilfred “Bill” Ernest Herring, Jr., 92, passed away on Tuesday, August 2, 2022. He was born on May 5, 1930, to Loretta (Tillman) and Wilfred, Sr. in Toledo. As a young man, Bill grew up in Ida, MI on the family farm at Lula and Jackman Road, and graduated from Dundee High School. His drive sheer determination to succeed were obvious from a young age. He later attended Michigan State University with the intention of studying to become a veterinarian, and later switching his major to follow his true passion of building worthwhile relationships with people in the business school. After graduating, Bill served his country in the U.S. Army for two years in motor pool 13 th tank battalion, stationed out of Fort Hood, TX.
On June 16, 1950, Bill married the love of his life, Nancy Jean Ufer, whom he met at alocal dance when she was 11 and he was 13. He later started his longtime career at Dana Corporation, where he would eventually retire at the young age of 58. While working at Dana, Bill achieved great success through his dedication to the company and strong work ethic and became President of Dana World Trade. His trademark “that’s my job” empowered and motivated others to be their best.
Bill was quite the extrovert – always entertaining and socializing. He loved cooking for large crowds, especially known for his grilling skills. He was an avid hunter for both large and small game and had many international travels and trips arranged around hunting. Fishing was another of his favorite pastimes, a passion that he made sure to share with his children and grandchildren. He truly was an outdoorsman who enjoyed the simple things and the company of his friends and family. Bill also loved animals throughout his life, eventually becoming a part owner in a ranch, finding a home for his best four-legged friend, his horse, Captain. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren are what brought him the most joy in the world. He was an exceptional family man that was supportive and encouraging to all.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Nancy Jean Herring; children, Wilfred “Bill” E. (Susan) Herring, III, Elise (Paul) Devers; grandchildren, Brooke (Roget) Aouad, Brandi (Chris) Russow, Paige (Justin) Musselman, Wilfred “Will” E. Herring, IIII, Grace Herring, Robert Herring; nine great-grandchildren; nephew, Bob Collins; many other extending family members; and countless friends and colleagues. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Beverly Collins; and cherished horse, Captain.
Friends will be received on August 14, 2022, from 3-7 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Avenue, Toledo, OH 43623 (419-841-2422. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, August 15, 2022, beginning at 11 a.m. at Hope Lutheran Church, 2201 Secor Road, Toledo, OH 43606. Burial will follow in Joy Cemetery.
