Wendell James Kollen

February 22, 1935 — June 8, 2015

Wendell James Kollen, age 80, of Perrysburg, Ohio, passed away on Monday, June 8, 2015 at Toledo Hospital.  He was born on February 22, 1935 in Adrian, Michigan to Harvey and Ruth (Kleinheksel) Kollen. He and his wife Gayle recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Wendell graduated from Zeeland High School in Zeeland, Michigan and went on to graduate from Hope College in Holland, Michigan.  He furthered his education at Clarkson College of Technology in Potsdam, New York, where he received his Master and Doctoral degrees. Wendell worked for Owens Illinois as a physicist and was a research professor at the Polymer Institute at the University of Toledo.  He was an active and longtime member of First Presbyterian Church in Maumee, Ohio.  Wendell had numerous interests. He was a ham radio enthusiast and enjoyed bicycling, woodworking and spending time with his family. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Lane (Maggie) and Brian (Carol); daughters, Julie (Steve) Aardema and Jodie (Greg) Stamm; 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters, Elaine TerAvest; Barbara (Don) Rabuck and Anita (Terry) Nyhuis.  In addition to his parents, Wendell was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Alison Aardema. Friends and family will be received at First Presbyterian Church, 200 E. Broadway Street, Maumee on Friday, June 12, 2015 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM.  Funeral services will be held at the church on Saturday, June 13, 2015 at 11:00 AM.  Interment will be at New Overisel Cemetery, Overisel, Michigan. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or the American Cancer Society Northwest Region, 740 Commerce Drive Suite B, Perrysburg, Ohio 43551.
