Judge Wendell Allen, 82, of Maumee passed away on January 25, 2013. He was born in Akron, OH on March 20, 1930. He was the son of Lyman and Vancynetta Allen and was a graduate of Akron Firestone Elementary School, Akron Garfield High School, and of the University of Akron, where he majored in history and participated in the U.S. Air Force ROTC program. Active in a variety of sports, he excelled as captains of cross country teams in both high school as well as college. He also organized and participated in traveling basketball teams. He achieved the honor of Eagle Scout. During summers, he worked full time at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. After graduating from the University of Akron in June 1952, he served in the United States Air Force as a First Lieutenant during the Korean War. While in the Air Force, he married Katherine McGeary on December 27, 1952 in Akron, OH before he was shipped to Japan. After the Korean War, he relocated to Toledo, OH where he attended night classes at the University of Toledo Law School. Ultimately, Wendell dedicated his life to civic affairs in Maumee, Ohio and the surrounding area. After graduating from the University of Toledo Law School, Wendell served as a Public Defender in the Toledo Municipal Court. He was in private practice for 15 years and was elected to three terms as judge of the Maumee Municipal Court from 1976-1993. He served as president of the Maumee Rotary Club and Maumee Chamber of Commerce. Other activities: head of the Maumee Red Cross Blood Bank, volunteer for Respite Care at St. Pauls Episcopal Church in Maumee, member of Maumees Master Plan Study Committee, chairman of the Maumee Citizens for Schools Campaign, member of the Maumee Charter Revision Committee 1968. He is preceded in death by his father Lyman Allen and his mother Vancynetta Held. Wendell is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Katherine A. Allen; four children Gregory P. Allen Jeanette of Chicago, IL, Douglas M. Allen Diane of Perrysburg, OH, Rebecca S. Griffith Scott of Johns Creek, GA, Michelle Allen-Parker Christopher of Nashville, TN; brothers Samuel P Allen Beth of Toledo, OH, James W. Allen Sandie of Brandon, FL, Charles A. Held Jean of Smyrna, GA; grandchildren Emily Allen, Courtney Griffith, Brett Griffith, Andrea Humason Lehman Andrew; great-grandchild Graham Lehman. The family will receive friends on Friday, February 1, 2013 from 3-8pm at the Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant Street, Maumee, OH, 419-893-7686. A memorial service will be held at St. Pauls Episcopal Church, 310 Elizabeth Street, Maumee, OH 43537 on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 11 am. Interment will follow in Fort Meigs Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Wendells name may be made to St. Pauls Episcopal Church Endowment.
