Walter “Wally” L. Meier, 81, of Port Clinton, OH passed away unexpectedly Thursday, October 13, 2022 in the E.R. at Magruder Hospital in Port Clinton. He was born on September 21, 1941 in Port Clinton, OH to Walter Lewis and Ruth (Wirth) Meier. Walter graduated from Port Clinton High School in 1959. He served in the U.S. Navy for 4 years in the Pacific Theatre in Okinawa, Japan aboard a destroyer. On January 9, 1965 in Port Clinton he married Alice Lowe, and she survives. Walter went to Coin Electric Electrician School serving his apprenticeship, and then worked with the I.B.E.W. Local 8 in Toledo. He then worked as a nuclear electrical engineer at different nuclear plants across the country. Walter was a 3rd degree Black Belt in Karate Shorin-Ryu style. He was an entrepreneur who owned and operated his own Karate school locally in Port Clinton and he was always proud to see some of his students become instructors themselves. He and his wife, Alice also owned and operated The Restaurant in Marblehead, OH for 4 years. Walter was a member of the Oliver H. Perry Masonic Lodge F&AM #341 in Port Clinton. He enjoyed sail boating and was also the owner and operator of Island Rentals & Sails at West Catawba Marina and in Key Largo, FL. He also worked as a realtor for Century 21 for about 5 years. Walter liked to have a good time, and was known to be a kind and good person, who liked to make sure everyone was ok. He was a very caring and thoughtful husband and provider. Walter enjoyed a good prime rib, a just seared steak, ice cream, a good Jack & Seven, chocolate, and any kind of sweets. He will be greatly missed.
In addition to his loving wife of 57 years, Alice, he is also survived by his sister, Janis (Jack) Meier Nitz, sister-in-law, Janet (Arthur) Nelson, many nieces & nephews, and his beloved black lab, Henry. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister-in-law, Sally Lunsford, and 3 brothers-in-law, Richard “Whitey” Lowe, Dennis Lowe, and William “Billy” Lowe.
Walter will be cremated under the direct care of the Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, 216 Washington St., Port Clinton, OH. Private family services will be conducted at a later date. Memorial contributions in memory of Walter may be given to the Ottawa County Humane Society, Island Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
