Walter E. Vuchnich VUCHNICH Walter E. Walter E. Vuchnich, age 94, passed away on November 15th, 2008, surrounded by his loving family. Walter and his adoring wife, Syble, were married for 62 years. They were blessed with three children, Wally wife, Carol, Elizabeth and Mark; three grandchildren, Nicholas wife, Marti, Alexander wife, Tracy and Robin Elizabeth and one great-grandson, Dashiell. Walter was born on August 31, 1914, to George and Martha Vuchnich in Hecla, Pennsylvania. After attending The Ohio State University he served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a lieutenant in the Army Ordnance and was stationed for three years in Italy. His unit was transferred to Camp Gruber, Oklahoma where Walter first met his wife, Syble, who worked in the office of the Camp Commander. They married in 1946 and he returned to work at The Lincoln Electric Company in Cleveland, Ohio. He was transferred to Wisconsin in 1947 where they lived for 18 years where he was active in community affairs, the American Welding Society and the Lions Club. Walter moved to Toledo in 1965 to serve as Lincolns District Sales Manger for northwest Ohio. He volunteered at the Penta-County Technical School teaching students welding techniques. He remained active in the AWS and served as Chairman: after 50 years of service he was made an honorary member. In 1988, Walter retired from Lincoln after 50 years of loyal service. For 43 years Walter was an active member of Epworth United Methodist Church always serving on church committees such as Finance, Building or Stewardship. He will be most remembered for his years as the Head Usher when he passionately welcomed each visitor to Epworth with a warm handshake and a friendly introduction. Once Walter met you, he never forgot your name. Walter also represented Epworth at the West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church and for nine years he served on the Board of Trustees. Throughout his life, Walter enthusiastically embraced sports and committed many hours instilling the joy of athletics and the importance of physical fitness to his children. He spent his lunch hours swimming or playing handball at the downtown YMCA and especially enjoyed playing golf with Syble. Walter was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Elizabeth. He is survived by his immediate family as well as sister-in-law, Edith Vuchnich of Toronto; nephew, Michael Vuchnich Angela of Toronto; nephew, Rick Steiner Kathy of Cleveland; nephew, Bud Withers Violet of Seattle; niece, Nancy Steiner of Cleveland and niece, Candace Stefl of Palm Springs. Friends may visit the family on Monday from 4-7 p.m. at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania west of Corey Rd.. A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. at Epworth United Methodist Church on Tuesday. Interment will be private at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. The family requests that in lieu of flowers please submit donations to The Epworth United Methodist Church Foundation or a charity of your choice.
