Walter E. Ellenberger, age 95, passed away on Monday, February 1, 2016, at Browning Masonic Community. He was born on September 15, 1920, in Port Clinton, Ohio, to James and Marie (Schrader) Ellenberger. Walter married the love of his life, Carolyn Carlson, on October 17, 1941, and they just recently celebrated their 74th Anniversary surrounded by family and friends. Walter is survived by his wife Carolyn and his three children, Charles (Jan) Ellenberger, Marcia (Phil) Storm, and David (Charlotte) Ellenberger as well as 6 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and 3 great, great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jim Ellenberger. After Walter graduated from Port Clinton HS in 1938, he served in the US Army Air Corps. He was trained as a Top Turret Gunner on the B-17 Flying Fortress and was Honorably Discharged in 1944. He was employed for 38 years with Owens-Illinois and held numerous positions before retiring in 1984 as their Corporate Facilities Planning Manager. Walter was a proud Mason for 74 years and member of the Robinson Locke Lodge, holding the highest accomplishment – the 33rd Degree. During his years as a Mason, he fulfilled various roles including Worshipful Master, Grand Sentinel, Worthy Grand Patron, Grand Chaplain, and Sovereign Master. He volunteered as a Shrine Hospitals van driver and traveled all over the US with Carolyn to attend Chapter and Council events. Walter was a former member of Augsburg Lutheran Church and First Baptist Church of Greater Toledo and current member of Monclova Road Baptist Church. Walter was a skilled fisherman and hunted game in Wyoming and Ontario. He and Carolyn traveled all over the US in their RV, went on countless cruises, and enjoyed many trips to Europe, Canada, Australia, and the Caribbean. Walter had a great interest in aviation and held a private pilot license in his early years. He was an avid reader and delighted in telling stories about his adventures. The family will receive guests at Walker Funeral Home on Saturday, February 6, 2016, from 2:00-7:00 pm, with a 7:00 pm Masonic Service. Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, February 7, 2016, at 2:00 pm at Walker Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children Cincinnati, Donation Office, 3229 Burnet, Cincinnati, OH 45229.
