Virginia A. O’Flaherty Ginnie passed away after a 4-year battle with dementia on Monday, January 16, 2017 at Kingston Residence of Sylvania. Ginnie was born on July 12, 1921 in Chicago, Illinois to Walter and Catherine Machewicz and spent her childhood in Berwyn, Illinois. She met her husband, John Joe O’Flaherty, while working for Western Electric in New Jersey. Following the war, they married and moved to Chicago where they started their family. After 38 years in Chicago, Ginnie and Joe retired to Palm Harbor, Florida where they enjoyed golf and friends. They cherished their annual Christmas gatherings and summer visits with their daughter’s family, most importantly their grandchildren. Ginnie moved to Toledo in 2010 to be closer to family following the death of her husband in 2008. Ginnie is survived by her son, John (Nancy) O’Flaherty of Naples, Florida; daughter, Eileen (Mark) Schreiner of Sylvania; grandson, Brian (Barbie) Schreiner of Charleston, SC; granddaughter, Bethany (Joe) Hood of Greensboro, NC; and great-granddaughter, Bellamy Schreiner also of Charleston. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews including special niece, Cathie Herndon and her husband Tom of Tallahassee, Florida. In addition to her husband, Joe, Ginnie was preceded in death by her sister, Lillian Schottenhamel, Peru, Nebraska; and brother, Bud Mack of Glendale, Arizona. Friends may visit the family from 5-7:00 pm on Friday January 20, 2017 at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Avenue (west of Corey Road). A funeral Mass will take place on Saturday, January 21st at 11:00 am at Little Flower Catholic Church 5562 Dorr St., Toledo. Interment will be in Palm Harbor, Florida at a later date. The family would like to thank the loving and caring staff of Kingston Residence of Sylvania for all of their help and support over these last 18 months.
