Virginia B. Martin

August 13, 1924 — January 6, 2014

Virginia B. Martin passed from us after a period of declining health. She was with her husband, David B. Martin, when she went on to join many loved ones in her heavenly home. Born in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, she lived most of her life in Oak Harbor, Ohio, and has resided in Columbus, Ohio for the past 1.5 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, John White Black and Alice Greenaway Black, her brother Robert Black, and her beloved daughter, Nancy Ann Martin. Those left to grieve her loss are her loving husband of 66 years, David B. Martin, her children, Richard Joann Martin of Denver, Jeannie Jamie Colner of Columbus, David Patty Martin of New Albany. She was much loved by her grandchildren: Robert Emma Colner of San Francisco; David JuLee Colner of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Joannie Nick DAndrea of Columbus; Andrew Martin of Los Angeles; Brian Martin of Denver; Eric Martin of Butler University; Ellen Martin of Wittenburg University; and Grace Greenaway Martin of New Albany. Virginias character was one of gentle kindness, good humor, and genuine interest in others before herself. She was a gracious person who was beautiful inside and out. She always welcomed and encouraged others. She greatly appreciated her family and friends. She made us all feel very special and loved. Virginia maintained a positive attitude for the sake of loved ones in spite of great health difficulties in recent years. A graduate of Allegheny College, Virginia was a highly intelligent woman. She was a social worker and teacher, but most of her life was spent providing quiet, strong, and loyal support to her husband and family. The example of a great and loving marriage was a shining example to all of us. She was a role model who displayed many admired qualities. The family is planning a private memorial service this spring in Oak Harbor, Ohio. As an avid lifetime reader, Virginia took great interest in the charitable work of the Columbus Childrens Dyslexia Center, which provides specialized tutoring for struggling readers at no cost to families. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Childrens Dyslexia Center of Columbus for the Virginia B. Martin Scholarship Fund, 290 Cramer Creek Ct., Dublin, OH 43017. Robinson-Walker Funeral Home Crematory, Oak Harbor, Ohio, is assisting the family with arrangements.
