Virgil H. Goetz

Virgil H. Goetz, 86, of Genoa, passed away Saturday evening, October 31, 2015, at Mercy-St. Charles Hospital in Oregon. Virgil was born April 28, 1929, in Rocky Ridge, Ohio, to William F. and Elnore F. (Fillmore) Goetz. He married Marilyn J. Discher on February 6, 1954, in Rocky Ridge and she preceded him in death on March 23, 2015. Virgil worked as a heavy equipment operator at U.S. Gypsum in Genoa for 18 years until 1965. He then worked for 20 years at the former Nicholson Concrete Supply as a crane operator until 1985 when the company went out of business. He retired in 1987 working out of Local #18 Operating Engineers Union in Toledo; he was recognized in 2015 for 50 years of service. Virgil was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of the American Legion Post #324 in Genoa. He was also a member of St. Johns United Church of Christ in Genoa, the Genoa Area Senior Citizens and Local #18 Retirees. Marilyn and he were avid campers and traveled coast to coast to many resorts. For many years Virgil bought and repaired bicycles, many of which are in use in Genoa today. He was often seen riding his recumbent bicycle all over the area. Virgil was also an avid euchre player. He is survived by his daughters, Mary (Michael) Thompson of Perrysburg, Diane Markham of Perrysburg and son, Robert V. Goetz of Sun City Center, FL; grandchildren, Michael, Andrew, Gregory, Bryan and Lori; great grandson, Gunnar William Goetz; and brothers, Vernon Goetz and Norbert (Brenda) both of Rocky Ridge and Vernell (Sandra) Goetz of Graytown. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son, Jeffrey Goetz, son-in-law, Thomas Markham, and siblings, Virginia Hodges, Violet Floriana, Vera, Velma, Oswald, Leon, Harry F. and Harry A. Goetz. Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Friday, November 6, 2015, at Robinson-Walker Funeral Home Crematory, 501 West St., Genoa. The funeral service will be conducted 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 7, 2015, at St. Johns United Church of Christ, 1213 Washington St., Genoa, with burial to follow in Clay Township Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested that memorials for Virgil be given to St. Johns United Church of Christ, 1213 Washington St, Genoa, OH 43430; Multiple Sclerosis Society of Northwest Ohio, 401 Tomahawk Dr., Maumee, OH 43537; or American Heart Association, 1701 Woodlands Dr. Suite 200, Maumee, OH 43537.
