Verna J. Hennen, 94, of Genoa, Ohio, died Saturday evening, August 12, 2017, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg, Ohio. Verna was born in Martin, Ohio, on May 1, 1923, to Fred C. and Lizzie A. (York) Schimming. She married Dean H. Hennen in Toledo, Ohio, on October 3, 1942, and he preceded her in death, after 69 years of marriage, on September 5, 2011. Verna was a secretary for 15 years in the lab at St. Charles Hospital until her retirement in 1985. She also had worked for the former Yankee Peddler Store in Genoa, for 12 years. She was always an active member of St. Johns United Church of Christ in Genoa, serving on the Altar Guild, as a Sunday school teacher, and as the secretary for the Womens Fellowship. Verna had also been a member of the Genoa Garden Club, enjoyed cake decorating, served as a Girl Scout leader for several years, and was a charter member of the Genoa Coterie Club, which organized in 1946. She and Dean enjoyed traveling, especially their trips to Europe and Hawaii. Verna is survived by her children, Karen (Fred) Koester, Joan Johnson, Dennis (Lenora) Hennen, Jodi (Jesse) Espinoza, grandchildren, Kara (Sherry) Koester, Kami (Steve) Claus, Ashley (John) Johnson-OKeeffe, Heath Hennen, Lance (Colleen) Hennen, Alex Espinoza, Troy (Tasha) Espinoza, and Ryan Espinoza, step grandchildren, Shelly, Jackie and Jamie, and 11 great grandchildren, Harly, Riley, Danielle, Mitchell, Reagan, Cooper, Harper, Jake, Jett, Rider and Ruger, great-great grandson Jace, along with niece, Deanna Broadway and nephew, Martin Soldenwagner. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings, Alice Diebert, Velma Connor and Ione Soldenwagner. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Wednesday, August 16, 2017, at St. Johns United Church of Christ, 1213 Washington St., Genoa, OH. Interment will follow in the Clay Township Cemetery, Genoa. Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m., Tuesday, August 15, 2017, in the Robinson-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, 501 West St. Genoa, OH. The family suggests memorials to the church in Vernas memory.
