Verna E. Field, age 82, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2016, after a 5 year battle with lung cancer. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio to Arthur and Elsie Kessler and was a graduate of John Marshall High School. Verna went on to attend Heidelberg College where she received a degree in Education. She was married to Richard C. Field in 1956 until his passing in 2002. A dedicated wife and mother, Verna balanced her family life with her passion for teaching. In 1974, Verna served as an educator of the Adult Basic Education program in Sylvania Schools and was appointed director of the program in 1981 until her retirement. To Verna, the adults attending this program were her children, and she dedicated much of her life to ensuring they received quality education. In addition to her career as a teacher, Verna was a member of the Toledo Emblem Club #500, the Ohio Child Conservation League (OCCL) and the St. Pauls Womens Fellowship. She enjoyed walking, sewing, tending to her flowers and gardening. She also enjoyed the harvest of her garden and was well known for her canning and cooking. Verna enjoyed volunteering at the Church Women United Thrift Shop. It was in her nature to always help others. She also enjoyed her summer home on Hemlock Lake in Michigan. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. She is survived by her daughters, Heidi (Michael) McClure and Ella (Dale) Davidson; sister, Mary Lou (Gordon) Belmont; brother, Kenneth (Marilyn) Kessler; as well as, grandchildren, Brian, Rachel, Sarah, Jeremy and Justin; and great grandchild, Adelyn. Visitation will be held, Saturday, February 27 at Sylvania United Church of Christ, 7240 Erie St, Sylvania, OH at 10:30 AM followed by a memorial service at 11:30 AM.
