Vern C. Horton, age 88, died on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Toledo. Vern was born November 20, 1922 in Toledo, Ohio to Francis and Lillian Navarre Horton. He graduated from Whitmer High School in 1940 and always looked forward to the monthly alumni luncheons. He was a veteran of the US Army and was the recipient of two bronze stars for his service in the China, Burma, India campaign of the Asiatic Pacific Theatre in WWII. He was a member of CBI China, Burma, India Veterans Organization. Vern was a Master Offset Pressman and worked for Heck Printing for 30 years. He then taught vocational printing classes for Washington Local schools retiring in 1989. Vern was a devoted husband, father, grandpa and friend. He had what appeared to be a tough exterior but a kind, soft heart. He was extremely generous with his time, talent and quiet wisdom. Vern played football for the Whitmer Panthers and continued to support the program through the years. He was also a huge OSU Buckeye fan and played a key role in helping the OSU side win the football Quiz Bowl at the last OSU/MI Day at Oakleaf Village Vern is survived by his daughter, Sue Daniel Trumbull; grandchildren, Abby David Hoeksema and Michael Trumbull; great-grandchild, Jack; sister, Nancy Doty; brother, Gary Horton; adopted daughter, Judy Kutter; and special friend Jettie Lee McCormick. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Carolyn and brother, Donald. Visitation will be on Tuesday, March 1, 2011 from 2-4:00pm and 6-9:00pm at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. west of Corey Rd. where services will be held on Wednesday at 10:00am.
