Tim R. Urrutia

January 24, 1914 — November 19, 2008

Timoteo Tim R. Urrutia, age 94, of Toledo, Ohio passed away at Hospice of Northwest Ohio Toledo Facility on November 19, 2008, surrounded by his loving family. A devoted husband for 70 years, father, brother, uncle, cousin, grandfather, great-grand-father and great-great-grand-father, Tims life is a success story. Tim was born on January 24, 1914, in Martindale, Texas, to Rita Rocha and Valentine Urrutia. A migrant farm worker, of few words, brought his wife and children from Helena, Texas to Toledo during the mid 1940s, to work in the pickle fields of northwest Ohio. It was a time of change for Tim and his wife Maria, as they decided to settle out of the migrant stream and make Toledo their home. As an ambitious husband, father and provider, who spoke only Spanish, with a fifth grade education, he taught himself how to read and write English fluently. As a visionary, his goal was to leave the fields to provide the Urrutia family with security, and his children the opportunity for an education and a life outside of the migrant stream. Tim began working at Willys Jeep Corporation and retired after 30 years later, in 1976. Today, after more than 60 years in Toledo, his mark is firmly imprinted in the foundation of the Latino leadership. Tims journey has ended, but his memory remains through his family of five generations. He is survived by his loving wife, Maria Hinojosa Urrutia; son, Michael J. Michal Urrutia; daughters, Mary John Flores, Irene Mario Garcia Juarez, and Helen Richard Hoffmann of Chicago; 26 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren. He was a foster parent for the Child and Family Agency of Northwest Ohio, a lifetime member of Latinos United, member of UAW Local 12 and also a parishioner and an usher at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Darby. Tim was preceded in death by his father, Valentine; his mother, Rita; 4 sisters; 3 brothers; 2 children and 1 grandson. Family and friends may visit on Saturday, November 22 from 9:00 a.m. - noon at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave. The funeral Mass will take place at 1:00 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Eastern and Broadway in south Toledo. The family requests any memorial donations be made to the Maria Urrutia Family in lieu of flowers. The family would also like to thank the University of Toledo Medical Center and Hospice of Northwest Ohio Toledo Facility for all of their special care. Condolences may be sent to the family at: www.walkerfuneralhomes.com
