Thomas R. Wolf

October 27, 1951 — February 13, 2009

Wolf Thomas R. Thomas R. Wolf, 57, of Sylvania, OH, died on Feb. 13, 2009 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg of urothelial cancer. He was born to Thomas and Evelyn Ulrich Wolf in Petoskey, MI in 1951 and was a 1969 graduate of St. Joseph High School in Fremont, Ohio. He attended Bowling Green State University earning a Bachelor of Science in journalism in 1978 and an M.B.A. in 1984. Tom used his journalistic skills in many ways, but was a true entrepreneur and educator at heart. He began his first business in 1974 and was involved in other business ventures over the next few years. He began his academic career in 1985 as an Assistant Professor of Business Technologies at the Community and Technical College for the University of Toledo and later added the role of Coordinator of Business Management Programs to his responsibilities. He also taught as a part-time instructor for the Certificate in Management Program at Capital University in 1988. At the time of his death, Tom was the Associate Dean and Chairperson of the Department of Business and a valued member of the Lourdes College community. He became a member of the Lourdes College community in 1985 as an adjunct instructor. His full-time status began in 1994, and in 1996 he was appointed the Chairperson for the Department of Business. He was also the Dean of The School of Business in 2001. Tom gladly accepted many different responsibilities in addition to teaching. During his years of service at Lourdes, he advised students pursuing the Bachelor of Individualized Studies BIS degree and students in the business programs. He was a constant presence on numerous committees within the College, especially those dealing with curriculum and program development. He was diligent in assessing the business curriculum, determining the needs of the community and being responsive to those needs. One of his main objectives was to provide students with educational experiences that could transform their lives and increase their awareness of the Franciscan Values of learning, reverence, and service. Through his role as advisor, he became not only a mentor to hundreds of business students, but also a friend. Toms love for his students and Lourdes was instrumental in the development of the Business Alumni Advisory Council and the establishment of the Elwood Haley Endowed Business Scholarship. He had many academic accomplishments, but he was extremely proud of his role in leading the Department faculty in achieving full accreditation status from the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education. His kindness and caring personality had a positive impact not only on his students, but also on students and alumni who knew of him only through his reputation. His passion, commitment and loyalty to Lourdes were an inspiration to his fellow faculty members, administration, staff and alumni. Tom also had a passion for golf, and usually played over 100 rounds annually. The Toledo Metropolitan Golf Association TMGA was blessed when Tom joined the Association in the early 1980s and soon thereafter became an officer and important cog in local amateur golf. Wearing several hats over the years with the TMGA, Toms most recognizable achievement was his tireless coordination of the areas two premier amateur tournaments: the S.P. Jermain Match Play Championship, held at Ottawa Park, and the Toledo Amateur Championship, held at Detwiler Golf Course. Even as competitive golf declined over the last few years, Toms zeal and novel ideas preserved these great golf traditions. Tom also started the TMGA Fall Classic, now in its 22nd year, as well as a season long TMGA Match Play tournament. Tom was an excellent golfer in his own right carrying a low single digit handicap. He won several TMGA events, with a low round of 66 and 2 hole-in-ones. In 2000 Tom was the recipient of the Burt Silverman Award for those who have enriched the community through their dedication to golf. Tom recently was nominated to the Toledo District Hall of Fame 2009. Surviving are his mother Evelyn Wolf; wife Karen Mohar; daughters Addie Will Hubler, Nicole Winegardner; sons Tony, Chris and Peter Winegardner; sisters Lynn John Duncan, Lora Wolf, Mary Steven Brundage, Marty John Moor; and grandchildren Presley, Tate and Kayla. He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas L. Wolf. Visitation will be held Monday from 2-9:00pm at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. west of Corey Rd. where a scripture service will be held at 7:30pm. The Mass of the Resurrection will be held Tuesday at 10:00am in the Queen of Peace Chapel at Lourdes College with Father James Bacik officiating. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or the Elwood Haley Endowed Business Scholarship for Lourdes College. Expressions of sympathy can be added to Toms website at www.caringbridge.org/visit/tomwolf
