Thomas J. Schultz

July 22, 1941 — February 16, 2018

Thomas J. Schultz of Maumee, Ohio passed away on February 16, 2018 in Naples, Florida as a result of a stroke. He was born in Toledo, Ohio on July 22, 1941 to John Jack and Naomi (Herman) Schultz. He attended and graduated from Maumee Schools, Class of 1959. On a full scholarship from LOF, he attended the University of Toledo. He graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Chemical Engineering, followed by Masters Degrees in Chemical Engineering and Engineering Science. In 1965, he joined Surface Combustion in Toledo, Ohio in Research and Development. He worked with a very talented group of men designing high temperature incinerators to destroy hazardous waste materials. He designed modifications to vacuum furnaces for the U.S. Government and the industrial sector. He was the process designer for the first plant to dispose of chemical munitions for the U.S. Army. He authored many technical papers. He has 14 patents. Health issues brought on his early retirement in 2001. He was very active in the Lutheran Church: serving in a variety of positions on the church council at Providence Lutheran in Holland, Ohio, and as a Sunday School teacher. He was involved in the Michigan District ALC and the Toledo Conference, often on social justice/community service organizations. At All Saints Lutheran, ELCA, Toledo, Ohio, he was a member of the congregation council and an active member of the congregation. He enjoyed cruising in his Mustang convertible, antiquing, and a chocolate shake. He spent hours woodworking- antique furniture restoration and wood turning on his lathe. In January 2001, he suffered a cardiac arrest and shortly after had 6 by-pass heart surgery. Ceasing work at Surface Combustion, travelling, visiting family and friends, and relaxing filled his days. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Gretchen (Jaessing); son, Jeremy T. (Kathy) and grandsons Tobias and Tyler. Sister-in-law, Barbara Schultz. Numerous extended family. Tom was preceded in death by parents and brother, David (Moe). Visitation will be held Friday, March 30, 2018 from 2-8pm at the Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home at 501 Conant Street, Maumee, Ohio 43537. A Memorial service will held Saturday, March 31, 2018 at 11:00 am at All Saints Lutheran Church at 5445 Heatherdowns Blvd, Toledo, Ohio 43614.
