Thomas Vincent Mangan, 87, died July 2, 2010, in Toledo after a long illness. Born February 11, 1923 and raised on Clevelands west side, Thomas was the son of John L. Mangan, Sr. and Elizabeth McGurk Mangan. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, then returned to Cleveland to work as a brakeman on the New York Central. He devoted his entire career to the railroad and received a series of promotions as the NYCRR evolved into the Penn Central and finally Conrail. By the time of his retirement in the mid-1980s, Tom was Superintendent of the Toledo Lakefront Dock and Railroad Terminal Co., which has since been phased out. Tom married his high school sweetheart, Audrey Frances Murray, in 1945. As Toms railroad career advanced, they relocated with their children from Cleveland to Ashtabula in 1958 and then to Toledo in 1963, but always maintained close and affectionate ties with friends and relatives in Cleveland. From their Toledo home on Shenandoah Rd. for many years, they particularly enjoyed their Westmoreland friends, neighbors and fellow parishioners at Gesu Catholic Church, where Tom was a long-time usher. The couple celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary shortly before Audreys death in August 2006. Also preceding Tom in death were his brothers, John and William. Left to treasure Toms memory are his eight children, Leigh Prebe Ron of Toledo, Lynne Edward Blank of Chicago, Janet Wiza John of Toledo, Patrick Julie of Columbus, Kim of Toledo, Michael Laurie of Crown Point, IN, Joseph of New York City and Shawn Pierce John of Philadelphia. Also mourning Toms passing are his three sisters, Kathy Flanagan of Westlake, Clare Ungericht of Parma, and Penny Ticherich of Berea; 16 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and special family friends, David Gaudette and Lisa Jacobs. Friends and family are welcome to join a celebration of Toms life at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave., Toledo, OH, on Tuesday, July 6, from 2-8 p.m. with a Scripture service at 7 p.m. Funeral services will begin in the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, followed by the Mass of Christian burial at Gesu Church, 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make memorial donations are asked to consider Gesu Catholic Church, St Vincent de Paul Society, or another charity of their choice. The Mangan Family commends the professional and caring staffs of Central Dialysis and Lutheran Village at Wolf Creek. The care provided to Tom was exceptional and heartfelt. We thank you.
