Thomas G. Gregory, 87, of Sylvania, passed away Saturday, Aug. 4, 2018, at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo. He was born Feb. 12, 1931 in Chicago, Ill., to the late William and Gertrude (Vogel) Gregory. He married Margaret “Maggie” (Daly) at St. Theodore Catholic Church in Chicago. The couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2017. Tom was a high school graduate of Augustinian Academy in Staten Island, N.Y., and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a major in mathematics from Loyola University in Chicago. He continued his education at the University of Hartford in Connecticut, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Tom also was a U.S. Army veteran. After stays in Hartford, Conn. and Fraser, Mich., Tom and Maggie brought their family to Sylvania in 1971. Tom worked for Teledyne for a time and then began a career as a consulting engineer with a focus in aeronautics. In retirement, Tom was involved with Habitat for Humanity, Catholic Charities, and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed his membership at Highland Meadows. Other favorite pastimes included hockey, basketball and bowling, and he was a huge fan of the Chicago Bulls and White Sox. He is survived by his wife; son, Chris (Carol) Gregory of Findlay; daughters, Gina (Dusty) Shaffer of Avon Lake and Anita Gregory of Whitefish Bay, Wis.; grandchildren, John (Gretchen) Gregory, Ellen (Patrick) Clunk, Mitchell (Danielle) Shaffer, Scott (Katie) Shaffer and Craig (Melissa) Shaffer; and sister, Janet Gregory of Hinsdale, Ill. He enjoyed visits with his three great-grandchildren and was looking forward to meeting his new great-grandson in October. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by brothers, William “Bill” Jr. and Bob; sister, Marilyn McLaughlin; and grandson, Tim Gregory. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2018 at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey Rd.) where the Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2018 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 5373 Main St., Sylvania, with Monsignor Michael Billian presiding. Additional visitation will be begin at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday in the church. Private burial will follow at a later date. The family would like to thank Peggy of the Visiting Angels and the staff at Heartland of Sylvania — especially Andrea, Jim, and Kathy — who gave Tom great care and comfort in his final days. They also would like to thank Taylor, Katie, Kim and everyone at St. Vincent Cardiac Intensive Care Unit for their kindness and compassion.
