Sylvester W. Stokes, 87, of Port Clinton, OH passed away, Friday, September 26, 2008 at H.B. Magruder Hospital, Port Clinton. He was born April 23, 1921 in Bedford, PA, a son of the late Thaddeus and Beulah Allen Stokes Sr. In earlier years Sylvester worked for Firestone Tire and Rubber then worked as an automotive technician for many years at Geller Toyota where he retired from. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army Infantry, serving during W.W. II. He married Charline Highwarden July 3, 1946 in Akron, OH and she survives. Also surviving are sons Walter Stokes of Akron, and Tyrone Stokes of Port Clinton; granddaughters Keeana and Jasmine Stokes both of Columbus, OH and their mother: Trina Johnson; grandsons Chris W. Stokes of Port Clinton, and Bryce Stokes of Fremont, OH; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Joyce Stokes, two brothers, and three sisters. Sylvester was the Green Youth Sports Director in Green, OH and the Suburban Youth Sports Director in the Akron-Canton area during the 70s, 80s and early 90s. He was inducted into the Green Sports Hall of Fame. He was an avid Cleveland sports fan, and loved the Browns, holding season tickets for many years. He was a hard worker who loved the outdoors, and fishing. He will be greatly missed by his loving family, and friends. Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 1, 2008 from 11:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. followed by funeral services at 12:00 P.M. at Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory 216 Washington St., Port Clinton. Pastor Harry Hunt will officiate. Burial will follow in Christy Chapel Cemetery. In honor of his love for youth sports, memorial contributions may be made to the Kruse Academy of MMA Martial Arts Center, 426 W.
