Syble Marie Vuchnich

Syble Marie Vuchnich passed away peacefully in her sleep on the morning of Friday, May 1, 2015.  She was born May 21, 1920 at her familys farm in Holdenville, OK.  She was one of nine children born to George and Etta Shields.  Syble attended Seminole High School and East Central State College.  She worked for the Ford Motor Company until World War II began and she was recruited by the U.S. War Department to serve as an administrative assistant to the Commandant of Camp Gruber in Oklahoma.  For the duration of the war, Syble was in charge of all secret documents on troop movements.  She met her future husband, Walter, at the camp when he returned from serving in Italy.  They married and had three children, Walter, Elizabeth, and Mark. Walter returned to his job at the Lincoln Electric Co. in Cleveland, Ohio after the war then transferred to Wisconsin, first Appleton and later, Milwaukee.  After the births of their three children, Syble began working in Christian education.  When the family moved to Toledo and joined Epworth United Methodist Church, she served as Director of Childrens Education for 10 years. After retiring from Epworth, Syble volunteered in the Flower Hospital Surgery waiting room for 29 years at the reception desk.  She was active in the Flower Hospital Auxiliary and the Corey Woods Garden Club for many years.  Syble was passionate about playing golf and belonged to several leagues.  She loved playing golf with Walter and playing new courses while on vacationed. Syble treasured her entire family.  She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Walter and her daughter, Liz.  She is survived by her sons, Walter (Carol) and Mark; grandchildren, Nicholas, Alexander (Tracey), and Robin; and great-grandchildren, Dashiell, Cora, Viviana, and Olivia. Visitation will be Sunday, May 3, 2015 from 4-7:00pm at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey Rd.).  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday at Epworth United Methodist Church, 4855 W. Central Ave. Toledo, OH 43615.   Interment will follow at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.  Memorial contributions may be made to Epworth United Methodist Church or to the charity of the donors choice.  Online condolences may be shared at walkerfuneralhomes.com.
