Sue was born on May 4, 1933, to Charles and Helen (Wild) Sommerfield. She passed away on May 8, 2017, peacefully at home. A 1951 graduate of DeVilbiss High School, she enjoyed working on eight class reunion committees, doing the book for six of them. Following high school, she began her secretarial career at the National Exchange Club. In 1953 she started at Libbey-Owens-Ford, where she was employed as a secretary for forty years, retiring in 1993. Sue was very active in many organizations, and served as president in all of them. She was president of Gamma Chapter, Junior Coterie; Glass City Chapter, IAAP; Women of the Church, Glenwood Lutheran Church; Children’s Service Club; and Samagama, a Club of Presidents. A Life Member of St. Luke’s Hospital Auxiliary, she served on the Board for twelve years in various capacities. Sue was very active in her church, teaching Sunday School for eighteen years, serving three terms on Church Council as Recording Secretary, and was an usher, communion assistant, reader, Altar Guild member and Bereavement Luncheon Chairman. She shared her love of reading with her Book Club, and her enjoyment of canasta with her monthly Canasta Club. She enjoyed going out with friends to lunch and dinner and to movies and concerts. Annually, she sent and received more than 100 birthday cards. Needless to say, everywhere she went in the city of Toledo, she ran into someone she knew, and was always excited to see them! She loved to travel and took many nice trips with friends. In Europe she especially enjoyed the Passion Play at Oberommergau, and Norway, Denmark and Sweden. She took three cruises; in North America she liked Canada’s Pacific Northwest, and experienced forty-five of our fifty states, her favorites being Alaska and Hawaii. Sue was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Charles of Phoenix, AZ; and her niece Patty Parker. She is survived by her brother George (Vivienne) of Toledo. Very special to her are her nephew, Matthew (Tara) Sommerfield and their daughters, Nora and Anne, of Allentown, PA: and her niece and God child Kristen (David) Wells, of Noblesville, IN. Two nieces, Pam Sommerfield, and Sally (Jim) Shoffer are in Arizona. At Sue’s request, she will be cremated. Visitation will be on Friday, June 2, from 3:00 to 8:00 at Walker Funeral Home on Sylvania Ave. A Memorial Service will be on Saturday, June 3, at Glenwood Lutheran at 11:00, beginning with visitation at 10:00. Memorials may be given to Glenwood Church, to St. Luke’s Auxiliary Flower Fund, or to a charity of the donor’s choice. Online condolences may be shared at walkerfuneralhomes.com.
