Dr. Susan MacKenzie Newell, 76, of Perrysburg, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at her residence, under the care of The Waterford at Levis Commons. On May 28, 1947, she was born in Media, Pennsylvania, to the late Charles MacKenzie and Susan (Skaggs) MacKenzie. She graduated from Ithaca College with her Bachelor’s degree, then Kent State University with her Master’s in Education in 1974, and finally, from the University of Toledo with her Ph.D. in Health and Wellness in 1979.
Susan dedicated her career to educating and assisting students. She entered the workforce as a substitute teacher and worked her way up to the principal of her charter school, where she wrote curriculum. After teaching, she transitioned to working with the Ohio Council of Community Schools, where she helped with the testing of charter schools.
She is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, William F. Newell; her daughter Cynthia and husband, Jeffrey Seaver; her stepson, Michael Newell; and her two loving granddaughters, Lauren (Drew) Strobel and Teagan Hass. She will also be missed by her dear friend, Robert Hass, and her beloved dog, Breslin. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Martha L. (MacKenzie) Boscia.
Susan loved tending to her plants and nurturing her garden in her spare time. She loved the ocean and enjoyed spending time in Florida. She admired all the beauty in the world, especially flowers, art, and pictures, and she expressed herself through her sense of fashion. She always added a bit of flair, sparkle, and sophistication to anything she did. She was an avid reader and relished spending time with family and friends. She will be remembered by all who knew her as incredibly strong, thoughtful, loving, and outgoing. She never said no to new experiences and loved adventures, which she enjoyed throughout the duration of her life.
Viewing will be held at Walker Funeral Homes, 5155 W Sylvania Ave, Toledo, OH, on Friday, April 12th from 2 pm to 7 pm, and on Saturday, April 13, from 10 am to 11 am. A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, April 13th, at Walker Funeral Home.
