Susan Brown Gillan

Susan B. Gillan, age 89, passed away peacefully on the morning of September 15, 2017 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg after a 2 week battle with Pancreatic Cancer. Susan was born March 8, 1928 to Ruel and Gertrude Brown. She was named after the flower the Black-Eyed Susan because of her snapping black eyes. She had an idyllic childhood with summers spent on Lake Erie in Port Clinton. She was a graduate of DeVilbiss High School and went on to attend Denison University following in her fathers footsteps. After college she worked as a bank teller at Toledo Trust downtown, where she met her future husband. On June 20th, 1953 she married John Francis Gillan and their union produced three daughters. She was a closing secretary at Welles-Bowen for sixteen years and was well known, well liked and very well respected in that capacity. She was a hard worker and very responsible in all areas of her life. She was an avid reader and crossword puzzle enthusiast in her later years. She lived in her own home until two weeks ago and managed all her own affairs. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Ruel Brown, Jr. Tad. She is survived by her daughters, Peggy Roemer, Mary Gillan Blake, Sheila Gillan; grandchildren, Teddy Roemer, John (Sara) Roemer, Sarah Roemer; great grandchildren, Grant, Nola, Clay; 2 nephews, niece; and her little dog Lucy. Funeral service will be held Thursday at 10:30 AM at First Congregational Church 2315 Collingwood Blvd Toledo, OH 43620 with Pastor Larry Vriezelaar officiating. Interment at Joy cemetery will be private. Assisting the family with arrangements is Walker Funeral Home 419-841-2422. Susans family would like to thank the nurses on the seventh floor at Toledo Hospital and the nurses at Hospice of Northwest Ohio 30000 River Rd Perrysburg, OH 43551. Also, thank you to her devoted friend and helper Daniel B. Krauss. She adored Dan and he lifted her spirits and has taken wonderful care of her dog, Lucy. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Toledo Area Humane Society 827 Illinois Ave. Maumee, OH 43537.
