Sue Elizabeth Jakeway, of Sylvania, Ohio passed away the Hospice of Northwest Ohio Perrysburg Inpatient Unit on November 29, 2010 at the age of 71 years. She was born outside of Gothenburg, Nebraska on a cattle ranch. Sue was raised with a strong belief in family, work and faith. Her life growing up was spent with her parents, two brothers and her sister helping on the farm. The working farm included raising cattle, hogs, and horses and growing wheat and corn. The family spent time hunting, fishing and enjoying the outdoors. Sue brought her family back to Nebraska every summer for a family reunion with her siblings and all of the children. At these trips the children were able to learn and appreciate a different lifestyle that harkened back to the pioneers who settled the plains and western United States. After graduating from high school, Sue attended what is now Northern Colorado University and received her undergraduate Degree in Education. Mrs. Sue Jakeway taught in Colorado and Michigan before joining the faculty of Toledos Robert Standish Rogers High School in September of 1964. Her teaching duties in the Business Education Department included typing and bookkeeping. In extra curricular activities Mrs. Jakeway was Varsity and Junior Varsity Cheerleader sponsor, advised the Pep Club and the Secretarial Club, and wrote, directed, and performed in the Faculty Follies, a spoof of school life presented for the student body each year. She was highly regarded by both her students and her peers and frequently organized faculty and staff gatherings as chair of the Social Committee. The active teacher left Rogers in 1968 to start her family, but returned to education when her children began school and received her Masters Degree in Education from the University of Toledo. Later positions included teaching business at Springfield High School, and various substitute stints for both Sylvania High Schools and back at Rogers. Mrs. Jakeway concluded her teaching career at Erie Mason High School in Erie, Michigan. Sue was very active for many years in Eta Chapter, Junior Coterie. Major fund-raising events for charity that she worked on included square dances, card parties, benefit shows at the Masonic Auditorium. As the group became smaller in recent years, she was the one who kept it going, organizing meetings which were often going out for dinner as a group, taking charge of the Christmas project which involved adopting families in need. She always delivered the carload of gifts, food, household items. Whenever a member was ill, she set up schedules for everyone to take food to them. Sue was the ultimate caregiver and spent her life trying to help other people. Her favorite saying was You have to make an effort to help people even when you feel the situation is hopeless. Sue volunteered at Mobile Meals for over 35 years delivering food to people unable to leave their own home. Sue was also an active member of Hope Lutheran Church in Toledo for almost 50 years. She was on the care giving committee at Hope Lutheran and visited people in the hospital and anyone who was sick or needed emotional support. All of these people were in very difficult circumstances and many of them were strangers who then became her friend. Sue was also a committed friend to countless other people who she spent her life laughing, loving and caring for as time went on. Sue met Bill Jakeway of Detroit, Michigan at Disney Land in Anaheim California in the summer of 1960. They were married on August 11th, 1962 and continued the marriage until her death for 48 years. Since 1970 they had a cottage at Lake Seneca in the very NW corner of Ohio. Bill and Sue spent the weekends at the cottage every summer where she enjoyed boating and water skiing and visiting with her friends. The cottage was her favorite place in the world and some of favorite memories were spent with Bill while taking a sunset cruise on the lake. Sue was a dedicated mother to her two sons; Bradley and Patrick. She tried to pass on all the values to them that she believed in so deeply and and worked so hard to achieve in life. She is survived by her husband Bill, her brothers Tim and Theron Wiggins, her sister Ann North, her two sons Patrick and Bradley and 4 grandchildren. Visitation will be on Thursday, December 2, from 4-7 PM at Hope Lutheran Church, 2201 Secor Rd. corner of Indian Rd. The funeral ceremony will be held at the church on Friday, December 3, at 11AM. Those planning a memorial contribution are asked to consider Mobile Meals. Arrangements by Walker Funeral Home, 419-841-2422. www.walkerfuneralhomes.com.
