Steven Kent Spoon, affectionately also known as “Spoony” 77, passed away on July 21, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was born in Findlay, Ohio on May 23, 1948, to Ralph and Doris Spoon.
Steve graduated from Findlay High School and went on to receive his Associates degree from Stautzenberger College. He began his career as a draftsman and went on to become a millwork estimator, retiring at age 66. After retirement, he stayed active working at Crosswinds Golf Club where his job was to mow the greens which he took great pride in. He went on to work in their pro shop where he loved interacting with the staff and clients.
Being a member of the OHSAA, Steve had a deep passion for sports and spent an incredible 43 years as a basketball referee officiating at the high school and small college levels. He also refereed volleyball, served as a shot clock operator for Owens Community College, where he was affectionately known as the “Candy Man.” Beyond officiating, he contributed to the game of golf through the USGA, rating courses throughout the region. Through his golf journeys, he proudly recorded a hole-in-one on August 12, 2010.
Steve loved traveling with his wife, family and friends which included many cruises throughout the world, trips to Hilton Head Island, his annual golf vacation with his golf buddies and also enjoyed visiting wineries in Ohio and Michigan, especially the Traverse City area.
Steve will be remembered for his endless energy, love for sports, and the joy he found in life’s simple pleasures. His family and friends will miss him deeply.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dave; and daughter, Tracey. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Sandy; sister, Deb (Jeff) Schiewe; siblings-in-law, Tim Eckel, Becky Naugle, Denny (Deb) Eckel, Karen (Steve) Welty, Pam Eckel; and many nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
Family and friends are invited to visit at Sujkowski-Walker Funeral Home, 830 Lime City Rd, Rossford, OH, on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with a prayer service beginning at 7:30 p.m. Private interment will follow at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or donor’s choice.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to the compassionate and dedicated medical team at Mercy Health-St. Vincent Medical Center Heart and Vascular ICU who provided exceptional care to Steve during his final days.
