Steven C. Mclaughlin

February 13, 1942 — April 15, 2014

Much loved father and husband, Steven “Steve” Conrad McLaughlin, 72, of Perrysburg, died Tuesday April 15, 2014, at St. Luke’s Hospital, from complications related to diabetes. He was born in Toledo on February 13th, 1942 to Viola (Weil) and Charles McLaughlin. He married Barbara Connolly on August 26, 1967, in Toledo. He was a 1960 graduate of Scott High School. He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Toledo and a master’s degree from Bowling Green State University. He taught middle school Earth Science for 32 years in Toledo Public Schools, primarily at Byrnedale Junior High, before retiring in 1998. Steve loved listening to music and also played guitar and some banjo. He especially enjoyed attending live shows of local musicians “Barile and May.” Steve was a sports fan, and a loyal supporter of U.T. Men’s Basketball and the Detroit Tigers. He played tennis and golf in his youth. Steve also enjoyed gardening, creating metal sculptures, annual camping trips to Higgins Lake, volunteering for his high school reunion committee, and spending time with his family. He believed in the importance of supporting public education. Fitting to Steve’s life-long fascination with astronomy, his life came to an end just as a spectacular total lunar eclipse began. Steve is survived by his wife, Barbara; son, Michael McLaughlin, of Perrysburg, OH; daughter, Sharney McLaughlin, and son-in-law, Nicholas Stock, of Encinitas, CA; brother, Bruce McLaughlin; grandchildren, Christian Hinson, Rowan Stock, and Kiara Stock; great-grandchild, Marlana Harvey and her mother Angel Harvey; nephews, Chad and Alex Smith. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made in Steve’s memory to the “Way Public Library Foundation and Friends.” A memorial in celebration of Steve’s life will be held in Perrysburg on June 28th; further details will be provided by the family at a later date. The family would like to give a special thank-you to the caring and dedicated staff at Arrowhead Dialysis Center and St. Luke’s Hospital; to Amy, Laura, and Robin, who provided excellent and compassionate in-home care services; and to the many family friends who offered their love and tremendous support to Steve and Barb throughout Steve’s long illness. Steve will be thoroughly missed and his essence will be carried on through his children and much beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
