Steven Louis King, 49, of Port Clinton, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 28, 2024, at Stein Hospice in Sandusky, Ohio.
He was a loving husband, brother, friend and artist. He worked as digital designer at n2y, an edtech company that creates curriculum for students with unique learning needs. While at n2y, Steve was instrumental in designing an interactive game that helps students learn about the weather.
Steve was born on October 8, 1974, to Robert and Jean King in Sandusky. He was the baby of the family. His sister, Corinne, doted on him and he looked up to his big brother, Gordon, and wanted to be just like him and his friends.
Steve graduated from Sandusky High School in 1993. He attended Bowling Green State University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts.
Although he and his wife Cathy probably met several times over the years and even had friends in common, neither remembers interacting with the other. In fact, they later learned that they definitely met in 1997 when they were both in a wedding and actually walked down the aisle together.
Steve met Cathy (again) in 2010 when her friend suggested that the two might make a good match. Cathy checked out his social media and saw that he liked the movie Shaun of the Dead. That was all the convincing Cathy needed. No two people were ever more perfect for each other, and they married on October 27, 2012, in an epic ceremony at the Sandusky State Theatre.
Steve was a devoted fan of Star Wars. He loved Luke Skywalker, especially the Luke action figure in Bespin fatigues. Steve finally met his hero, Mark Hamill, in person at Star Wars Celebration 2016 in London. And while Cathy hoped that their wedding was the best day of Steve’s life, she is pretty sure it was actually the day he met Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher.
Steve was an amazing artist who was most comfortable with a pencil or brush in his hand. Steve could paint and draw - anything creative really - and was an exceptional comic book artist. He worked on many projects with his close friend and co-creator Ryan Kacsandy, their most recent endeavor being a horror comic called The Saturday Night Slasher. In recent years he joined “The Invasion of the Podcast” with Paul Steadman. The two discussed many topics based on their mutual love of pop culture and movies.
Steve was preceded in death by his father Robert King and his mother, Jean Wolfe (Offenburg). He is survived by his wife and soulmate, Cathy King (Carr); sister Corinne (Jim) Gentry; brother, Gordon (Becky) King; his beloved fur children: Bruce, Bosco, Rey and Bowie; and many other relatives and friends.
Visitation is from 1 to 3 p.m., Saturday, February 3, at Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home, 216 Washington St., Port Clinton, Ohio. A memorial service will follow at the funeral home at 3 p.m.
After the service, family, friends and co-workers are invited to celebrate Steve’s life at a reception at The Arts Garage (TAG), 317 W. Perry St., Port Clinton. The celebration will include light hors d'oeuvres, drinks, fellowship and an exhibition of Steve’s art.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the GPCAAC (Greater Port Clinton Area Arts Council) - Steve King Memorial Scholarship, 317 W. Perry Street, Port Clinton OH 43452.
