Devoted husband to his beloved wife Ellen and father to Stephen III, Melissa and Shari, Steve died Monday, November 1, 2021 in Toledo, Ohio. A gentle soul, he was a friend, coach, informal teacher and mentor touching many lives over his 85 years on earth. Steve was born on October 30, 1936 in Toledo, Ohio. He graduated from Clay High School, Oregon, Ohio, in 1954 and the University of Toledo in 1962 with a degree in Marketing and Accounting. Active in both sports and organizations, he was a member of Clay’s and UT’s baseball teams, president of the UT Newman Club, and active in the Toledo Catholic Youth Organization. After graduation, Steve remained active in the UT Alumni Association. He proudly served in the Army reserves, rising to the rank of Specialist 5. Steve worked for the John Hancock Life Insurance Company for over thirty years, covering Lucas and Wood Counties. He continued to be active in the community as a member of the Rossford, Ohio Area Junior Chamber of Commerce. After retiring he served as a friendly face, greeting customers at Anderson’s West Toledo store. Active for over 50 years in Toledo’s Most Blessed Sacrament Parish, Steve loved singing in the parish choir and acting with the Blessed Sacrament Players community theater. Available to teach and mentor, he volunteered as a long-time Little League baseball coach for the parish youth. Steve loved to travel, setting up his camper across the U.S. or trekking to Europe and Asia, striking up conversations with fellow wanderers wherever he went. Steve was preceded in death by his daughter Melissa, his parents Stephen and Elizabeth (Kandik), brother Ronald and his wife Rita, and brother-in-law James Allen. He is survived his loving wife of 59 years Ellen (Peterson), son Stephen III and his wife Amy of Bellevue, Nebraska; daughter Shari Rady Greenland of Cleveland, Ohio; grandchildren Zachary Rady, Hannah Greenland, Fiona Greenland, Edmund Rady-Peters, and Nathan Greenland; sister Barbara and Richard Gerasimiak of Sylvania, Ohio; sister Margaret and Jan Millen of Leesburg, Florida; sister Christine Allen-Powers and Ronald Powers of Sylvania, Ohio; and special friend Chris Peters of Columbus, Ohio; as well as in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and numerous friends from far and wide across the United States. The funeral will be Tuesday, November 9, 2021 at the Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 2240 Castlewood Drive, Toledo Ohio. Viewing in the narthex begins at 9:30 A.M. and the mass begins at 11:00 A.M. with reception to follow in the Kelly Room of the parish hall.
