Shirley Ann Stewart, 92, passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2023. She was born in Dundee, MI to Theodore Stewart and Hazelle (Borgert) Winterhalter on June 9, 1930. Shirley graduated from Clay High School in 1948. She excelled in typing and especially loved shorthand. She used these skills for many jobs throughout her life, including Auto Lite, Ohio Bell, Columbia Gas, Transworld Airlines, and Owens-Illinois.
While working as a private secretary at Owens-Illinois in 1975, Shirley’s love of flying motivated her to earn her commercial pilot license for single and multi-engine land instrument airplanes. Shirley was then certified as both a flight instructor and ground instructor pilot. For a short time, Shirley spent her days flying a DC-3 out of Dallas Texas with Airgo Co. She then returned to Toledo and rejoined Owens-Illinois, this time at the Toledo Express Airport as flight dispatcher for the corporate staff. Shirley was a talented artist and natural homemaker which was showcased wherever she lived.
She never married, but is survived by her sister, Frances Garris; and many nieces and nephews, including Jim Stewart, who has graciously cared for and watched over Shirley for many years, and her loving nephew, Mark Garris, with whom she was very close.
Services for Shirley will be private. She will rest peacefully at Toledo Memorial Park. Arrangements were entrusted to Walker Funeral Home, Toledo.
