Shirley Ann Komoruski was born on an unseasonably warm Saturday, January 21, 1939, in Jamestown, North Dakota, to Edward W. Komoruski and Helen Heinrich Komoruski. The eldest of three children, she was preceded in death first by her brother Edward John Komoruski of Camarillo, California; then by the middle child, her sister Carmen Jean Komoruski Woodruff of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Shirley graduated from Jamestown High School in 1957 and Jamestown College in 1960. Although having majored in Mathematics, she was fascinated by the approaching presidential election of 1960 —an interest that caused her to apply for a National Defense Education Act (NDEA) fellowship for the study of politics at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. There she earned Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Political Science in 1964 and 1970. In the second week of September, 1962, she met fellow student James Lindeen in a seminar being held on the fifth floor of Love Memorial Library, and two were wed the following August. They accepted positions at Central Missouri State College in 1966, and then at the University of Toledo in 1967. Later, she earned a Master of Business Administration degree at UT, with an emphasis in Accounting. A year after beginning at Sylvania Bank, the institution was sold to First National Bank of Toledo, which was itself was eventually sold to Society Bank, and finally merged into Key Bank of Cleveland, where she eventually worked at Key’s downtown Operations Center. Shirley also taught courses in business mathematics at Michael J. Owens Community College. Since 1985, Shirley was a resident of Sylvania Township. Until very recent years she enjoyed travel within the United States and Canada, the United Kingdom, and the Czech Republic. Shirley is survived by her daughter, Lorelei Ann Collins (Edward A.) of Huntington Woods, MI; by son, James E. Lindeen (Kristen R.), of Portland, MI; nieces, Paula L. Fortune (Mark A.) of Barrien Center, MI, and Kirsten Bucher (James) of Grand Rapids, MI; by her husband of fifty-five years, James W. Lindeen, and by Merlin, the family cat. As a wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, clear-headed adviser, copy editor, and best friend, her passing leaves behind a deep and unfillable chasm. A Memorial Service for Shirley will begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at Saint Michael’s in the Hills Episcopal Church, 4718 Brittany Road, in Ottawa Hills, where she had been a member of the Altar Guild. In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome contributions to the “Kurt+Peter Foundation” of Menlo Park, California, to fund and find a cure for limb-girdle muscular dystrophy Type 2 C disease. Shirley also was a supporter of ASPCA Guardians and Nature’s Nursery. Arrangements by the Walker Funeral Home (419-841-2422). Online condolences may be placed at walkerfuneralhomes.com
