Shirley Hamway, 88, of Toledo, Ohio passed away on September 5th, 2025, under the wonderful care of Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Visitation will be held at Walker Funeral Home on Sylvania Avenue on Sunday September 7th from 4:00-7:00 pm with funeral services on Monday September 8th at 1:30 pm.
Shirley was born in Dearborn, Michigan on February 1, 1937. She moved with her family to Toledo in her early years, graduating from Waite High School in 1955. She was very proud of her East Side roots. She graduated from the University of Toledo in 1960 as an art education major. During that time, she enjoyed studying at the Toledo Museum of Art.
Shirley was married to Jimele Hamway on November 5th, 1961. They enjoyed 51 years of marriage prior to his passing. Shirley and Jim were a very close couple who enjoyed working, traveling and being with their grandchildren.
Shirley never worked in the field of education after graduation. Instead, she stayed at home to raise her children through their teen years. After that, she went to work with her husband at Hamway’s Food and Spirits where she was a gracious hostess and an expert grocery shopper. She worked alongside her husband in the restaurant business for 25 years.
Shirley is survived by her son, Tom (Beth) and daughter, Sue (Marty Petersen). She had three devoted grandchildren who were the absolute lights of her life, Ashley (Ryan Zawacki), Thomas (Krystie Caraballo) and Elizabeth (Maggie McCann). Siblings; Maurice (Clare) Talip, Frank (Marion) Talip and Laila (Joe) Aossey. She also shared a close relationship with her numerous nieces and nephews.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Jimele; and her parents, Albert and Adeline Talip.
