Shirley Anne Floro, 91, of Oak Harbor, OH passed away Monday, November 4, 2024 at Mercy St. Charles Hospital, Oregon, OH. She was born on September 11, 1933 to Edward and Emma Retta (Wadsworth) Grogg. Shirley graduated from Port Clinton High School. On September 6, 1951 in Angola, IN she married Ronald Lee Floro, and he preceded her in death on November 14, 2002. After her children entered junior high school she earned her license in Cosmetology and started her beauty salon “Shirley’s Style Center”. She also earned her real estate license. Shirley worked many other local jobs: she managed a branch office at Strout Realty, was a teller at National Bank of Oak Harbor, a clerk typist in the Adjutant’s office at the Erie Army Depot, worked in the butcher shop at Bassett’s IGA in Oak Harbor and attained President’s Club selling Avon products. She had a small sewing and alterations business and did monogramming. Her favorite pastimes were reading and sewing.
Shirley was a member of TOPS, Black Swamp Spinners Guild, and D.A.R. She enjoyed genealogy and spent a lot of time tracing the Floro family history back to the 1600’s. Shirley was an avid reader, especially of history and historical fiction. In the late 1960s and early 70s she raised poodles and more recently enjoyed raising chickens. She had a soft spot for animals and she really loved her cats, Sally and Lady. In the early 1960’s Shirley and her family lived briefly in California and New Mexico and then settled back in Ohio, where having a farm was always her husband’s dream and she helped him to realize it. After Ronald’s death she became a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ and faithfully attended home bible fellowships with The Way International. Her family is going to miss her love, cheerfulness, kindness shown to others, and her willingness to always help others. Shirley was mentally sharp and independent until almost the end of her life. She had a good heart and will be dearly missed.
Shirley is survived by her children, Lee (Earl) Thompson and Dennis (Pamela) Floro, grandchildren, Louis (Mary) Floro, Jennifer (Mario) VanHattem, and Jeffery (Kaydee) Floro, and great grandchildren, Shay Roddy, Gavin Roddy, Elba VanHattem, Anthony Floro, Adrianna Floro, Makayla Floro, Ally Floro, and Hayley Bare. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings; Edward “Ned” Grogg, Amy Vincek, Rosemary Netherton, and Mary Riveras.
