Sharon H. Nelson, 72, of Toledo, Ohio, died Saturday July 25, 2015 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg surrounded by her family. Sharon was born in August of 1942 in Chicago, Illinois and was later adopted by Dorsey D. and Bessy M. (Gahm) Husenetter. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, Illinois, where she an active member of the Theatre. While at college, she met the love of her life, Andy Nelson. They married on December 28, 1968 in Highland Park, IL and he survives. Sharon was a small business person and organizer at heart. She did such diverse things such as managed several large restate offices on North shore Chicago and “Cookies from Home,” which sent cookies to kids away from home. However she was proudest of her volunteer work. Sharon just seemed to have a need to help if she could. Over the years she worked on adoption issues both in Chicago and here in Toledo, as well as mental health issues with AMI and NAMI here in Toledo. She even returned to her roots to teach American History to candidates for US citizenship and she did a stint with The Youth Treatment Center (YTC) here in Toledo. She was a long time member and activist in the Presbyterian Church. Along with her husband Andy, Sharon is survived by her son, Robert D. Nelson; grandchildren, Robin L. and Kayli M. Nelson and sister, Dale Hughs. She was preceded in death by her parents and son, Ralph A. Nelson. A memorial service will be held Friday, August 7, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. at the First Presbyterian Church, 200 E. Second Street, Perrysburg. Burial will be private at Fort Meigs Union Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to Witzler-Shank Funeral Home, 222 E. South Boundary Street, Perrysburg, OH (419-874-3133). Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
