Legendary teacher, track coach, mentor, beloved father and grandfather, Samuel A. McCoy, has taken his final lap around the track. He passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 27th at 4:45 P.M. at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Sam, as he was commonly referred to by friends, students and family was born May 8, 1933, in Napoleon, Ohio. There he discovered his first loves of football and track and field. Exceptional at both, he still holds records to this day for most touchdowns in a game (5) against Perrysburg and numerous sprint records. He was a 1956 graduate of Bowling Green State University, earning his Bachelor’s in science of education and later his Masters of Arts. From there, he found his second love of biology which he taught for 40 years at Maumee Valley Country Day School and chaired the science department for 38 years. Sam, his students, and athletes earned many honors. Among his proudest accomplishment include the Knight-McCoy running track, the McCoy Science wing, and being inducted into the Napoleon Athletic Hall of Fame. Sam continued his passions for track and field by starting the track program at MV and earning his Ohio and USATF officiating certifications. He was one of the few in the world who was able to do what he loved for a living. Of course, his greatest impact was on his children and grandchildren. Sam instilled in his sons a love of education and Christian values. Sam was preceded in death by his parents, John and Angela McCoy and his brother, Thomas. He is survived by his sons, Leland, Aaron (Cherise), Jeremy (Autum); grandchildren, Connor, Gavin and Tatum and long-time friend Margaret Blackburn and former wife, Denese Malacos (John). Friends and family will be received Wednesday, June 2, 2021, from 2-8 P.M. at Witzler-Shank Walker Funeral Home, 222 E. South Boundary Street, Perrysburg (419-874-3133). A Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, June 3, 2021, at 10:30 A.M. at St. Rose Catholic Church, 215 E. Front Street, Perrysburg, Ohio 43551.
