Samuel Lawrence Mayer

March 15, 1929 — January 4, 2017

Larry passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, January 4 2017 at his residence at The Commons at Providence in Sandusky Ohio. Larry was a man of few words but a man who embodied the quiet integrity and love of family and friends. He loved his wife Shirley and his 2 girls Ginger and Susan. Although quiet even until the end he had a very sly, and dry sense of humor. Larry was an accountant by trade and he earned his CPA by scoring in the top 10 in the country in his class. He worked for most of his professional career for the Green Bay Packaging company as their Vice President of Administrative Services. More importantly Larry loved the water and the game of tennis. His family cottage on the shore of Lake Michigan in Glenn, Michigan was his place to gather the family for many weekends and vacations and he and his wife Shirley made sure that the cottage was a place all the family could call home. His other favorite place on the face of the earth was Caneel Bay Resort on the island of St. John which he his wife and girls would visit annually. So often were their stays on Caneel that the staff treated them both as family. On the tennis court he played with deadly accuracy and was fierce at the net. Shirley, his wife of 62 years passed away this past October. We all agreed Larry may have passed so soon following her death because of a broken heart. He shared many times following her death how much he missed her and how important she was to him. The surviving family of his 2 daughters, Ginger Schenk (Mike) and Susan Mayer and his grand kids Lara Skuza (Jon), Michael Weiss and Zachary Weiss and great grand child Cora Skuza will all miss Larry as even though he was quiet he could always be counted on for support and love. Larry, Shirley, Jessie, his grand daughter as well as other family members since passed are all together now. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, January 7th, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Resurrection Lutheran Church, Catawba Island. In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorials be made to the Jessie Schenk Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o the Toledo Community Foundation. Arrangements entrusted to Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home and Crematory, Port Clinton. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.walkerfuneralhomes.com.
