Samuel P. Layman, 98, of Otterbein Portage Valley, formerly of Perrysburg, Oh passed away peacefully on December 21, 2014 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg. He was born on, April 1, 1916, on Raymer Blvd. to Albert Fredrich and Addie Ruth (Franklin) Layman. They later moved to the farm on Keller Road in Moline, Ohio in 1918. Sam graduated from Lake High School in 1934. He married Alma O. Rietz on February 1, 1940. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II as MO.M.M 3rd Class. Sam was employed at the Dana Corp. (Spice Trans. Div.) from January 17, 1941 to 1981 when he retired as a process engineer. He was a life member of Perrysburg American Legion Post #28 and V.F.W. Post #6170, Phoenix Masonic Lodge #123, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Valley of Toledo and a member of Dana Quarter Century Club. He was assistant Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop #110 for a number of years. Sam volunteered at the Lutheran Home off of Seaman St. for 21 years logging in over 6000 hours. Sam was also a member of Grace United Methodist Church. Sam is survived by his loving children, Gerald S. (Patricia) Layman, of Jonesboro, AK, Dennis W. (Kay) Layman, of Perrysburg, OH, and Joann S. (Jerry) Keith of Whitehouse, OH, daughter-in-law, Marilyn (Paul) Baith, of Midland, NC, 14 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Alma, son, Todd C. Layman, siblings, Russell, Howard and Glenn Layman and Gladys Perry. Friends will be received on Tuesday December 23 from 3:00 to 8:00 P.M. in the Witzler-Shank Funeral Home, 222 East South Boundary St, Perrysburg, Ohio 43551 (419-874-3133) where Phoenix Lodge #123 F. & A.M. Services will begin at 7:30 P.M. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 24, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. in the Grace United Methodist Church, 601 East Boundary St, Perrysburg, Ohio 43551 with Pastor Dennis Ditto officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Meigs Union Cemetery with military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio and Otterbein Portage Valley.
