Sam Joseph Mason

Sam J. Mason, 69, of Waterville, OH passed away Friday, January 27, 2011, at St. Lukes Hospital, Maumee surrounded by his loving family. Sam was born in Toledo, OH on September 18, 1942 to Leonard and Emily Lehman Mason. A veteran of the Marine Reserves, Sam served as a Toledo Police Officer for over 25 years, retiring in 1990. He began his career by walking the beat in Downtown Toledo. Later he worked with adolescents, and finished his career in arson investigation during which time he worked very closely with the ATF. In retirement, he enjoyed working as a driver for Flower Hospital Oncology Department, where he was able to touch many lives and bring joy to people who were going through rough times. Sam had a special way of helping other people. Family was first in his life. He was a loving husband and wonderful father as well as a source of tremendous strength for his family. He also loved golf, especially at the former Hickory Hills course of which he was a past president. He was an avid fisherman. He and his wife greatly enjoyed travel and the ocean. Destin and Cocoa Beach, FL, Lake Lure, NC and Myrtle Beach, SC were favorite destinations as well as many others. Sam is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Connie; sons, Steve Mason Lisa, Todd Mason Jennifer, and Shawn Mason Julie; grandchildren, Haley, Chelsey, Jake, Jamie and Jerod Mason; brothers, Leonard Jr. Ruth, John Pat, Ken Judy, and Bob Phyliss Mason; sisters, Ruthanne Bennett and Judy Reidlinger. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Paul Mason and sister-in-law, Judy Mason. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 3-8 pm at Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant Street, Maumee, where a Scripture Service will take place at 7 pm. The Memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday at 11 am at St. Patricks Providence Catholic Church, 14010 US 24 West, Grand Rapids, Ohio.
