Salvador Olalde

January 31, 1928 — June 11, 2021

Salvador Olalde, 93, of Port Clinton, Ohio passed away on Friday, June 11, 2021 at Concord Care Center in Sandusky, Ohio. He was born on January 31, 1928 in Mathis, Texas, the son of the late Gonzalo and Hilaria (Rodriguez) Olalde. He married Elida Alvarado on January 17, 1953 and she survives. Sal was a United States Army Veteran serving our country during World War II. After he was honorably discharged from the Army, he got a job at the former New Departure Automotive Manufacturing Plant where he worked until he retired in the early 1990’s. He especially enjoyed his heritage and therefore worked as a spanish radio announcer at many local radio stations around Port Clinton, Sandusky and Fostoria for over 40years. During that time he also worked at a TV station in Bowling Green. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Port Clinton. He was also a member of the American GI forum in which he helped organize the La Raza Unida to help make better living conditions and wages for migrant workers. Sal was an avid music lover, especially Mexican Tejano music. He also was an accomplished bass guitar and accordian player. Some of his hobbies included vegetable gardening, going to flea markets, and BBQing on the grill. Most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his family. Survivors include his loving wife, Elida; sons, John (Ruth Hoffman) Olalde, Fremont, Ohio and Joe (Della Smith) Olalde, Toledo, Ohio; grandchildren, Alex and Cameron Olalde, and Laura Olalde; great-granddaughters, Emily and Mila Olalde; as well as nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by eight siblings. Visitation will be held at the Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home, 216 Washington Street, Port Clinton, Ohio on Wednesday, June 16, 2021 from 2-8 pm, with the Rosary being recited at 7:30pm. On Thursday, June 17, 2021 additional visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10 am until funeral services at 11 am with Fr. Jonathan Wight officiating. Burial will follow in Christy Chapel Cemetery, Portage Twp. Memorial Contributions may be made to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 414 Madison Street, Port Clinton, Ohio 43452.
