Ruth Sherman

September 29, 1923 — June 19, 2016

Our beloved mother, Ruth ORourke Sherman, age 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 19, 2016 at Kingston Residence of Sylvania with her daughters by her side. She was born in Plymouth, PA to the late Thomas and Rose ORourke and was the second youngest of 11 children. Ruth graduated from Plymouth High School and Bayonne Nursing School where she became a Registered Nurse. A veteran of World War II, she was an Army nurse at Fort Dix, New Jersey where she met her husband Robert, who preceded her in death in 1975. Ruth was an exceptional caregiver and was a Registered Geriatric and Psychiatric nurse for nearly 50 years. Ruth was a special and selfless person who was always thinking of others before herself. She truly enjoyed life and was extremely positive and happy. Ruth liked to have fun. She loved shopping, reading, current events, playing the slot machines in Atlantic City (where she was a VIP member), QVC, eating out, traveling, and being with family and friends. Ruth also loved watching sports and cheering for her favorites. She loved her Irish heritage and was an avid Notre Dame Fighting Irish fan and also liked Penn State, Ohio State, Eli Manning, and Phil Mickelson. Ruth loved her country, was proud of her service and enjoyed celebrating the patriotic holidays. Our mom was always there for us. She made us feel loved and set a wonderful example of strength, kindness, caring, and compassion. Even when struggling with dementia, Ruth was happy and people liked to be around her. She enjoyed reading to the other residents (Readings with Ruth), and taking care of her baby dolls. In addition to her parents and husband, Ruth was preceded in death by her sisters, Catherine, Ellen, and Elizabeth; and brothers, John, George, Donald, William, Thomas, and Leonard. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Donna Kean (John) and Mary Baker (Bill); grandchildren, Jeff Kean, Jason Kean, and Cindy Karnes; great-grandson, Austin; sister, Peg Melone; and many nieces and nephews. Our family would like to thank the kind staff in the Kingston Memory Care Unit and also ProMedica Hospice for their loving care of Ruth. Funeral Mass and burial will take place in Pennsylvania. Those wishing to offer memorial contributions are asked to consider the Alzheimers Association, 2500 N. Reynolds Rd. Toledo, OH 43615 or ProMedica Hospice, 5855 Monroe St. #201 Sylvania, OH 43560.
